Mui Ne has a way of turning tourists into explorers the moment they trade the sidewalk for four wheels. Picture cresting the White Sand Dunes as the morning light turns them gold, then dropping down the coast road toward the Fairy Stream, where a red-and-white sandstone canyon opens up right where you parked. A quad makes both of those moments easy to reach in the same afternoon, and that freedom to wander off the resort strip is really what you're paying for.
This stretch of coast was practically made for it. The dunes, the fishing village and the coastal viewpoints are scattered across a 20–30 km strip, much of it loose sand that a scooter bogs down in and a car simply can't follow. A quad shrugs off both the paved coastal road and the soft dunes themselves, and with traffic here far lighter than in Vietnam's cities, it's the terrain and the distances — not the congestion — that make a quad the natural choice for getting around.
Quads aren't treated as ordinary road vehicles here — they're mostly ridden on the dunes and tracks under an operator's supervision rather than checked against a driving licence, so the rules are looser than for a scooter or motorbike. Even so, most operators set their own minimum age, generally 18, and will ask for a deposit, sometimes cash, sometimes your passport held as security. If you plan to combine your quad ride with any road-legal riding, bring an International Driving Permit just in case.
Expect to pay around 390,000–450,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 500,000–650,000 VND per day in high season. Larger or newer four-wheel ATVs, or extended tour packages, can run 800,000–1,000,000+ VND per day.
December through March is high season — dry, busy and priced accordingly, with Tết pushing things even higher for a couple of weeks. Book ahead if you're travelling then. June to September is quieter and cheaper, though afternoon rain is more likely, so mornings are your best bet for dune riding.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory by law for riders and passengers on any motorcycle, moped or scooter, and while quad tours are more loosely supervised, it's worth wearing one regardless. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone driving or riding, enforced through roadside breath checks, so save the beach bar for after you've parked. Speed limits are lower in built-up areas than on the open road, and they're signposted rather than fixed nationally, so keep an eye on the roadside signs as you ride.
