Picture the coast road at Lamai Beach opening up in front of you, sea on one side, palm-shaded hills on the other, with nowhere to be until you decide. A quad bike lets you leave the beach chairs behind and climb straight up toward Na Muang Waterfall or the statue-lined slopes of the Secret Buddha Garden, places most beach-goers never reach because a scooter simply won't do it.

Lamai's own shoreline road is flat and forgiving, easy on any set of wheels, but the attractions that make this side of Koh Samui worth exploring sit inland, up steep and often unpaved hill tracks with loose gravel and sharp gradients. A quad's grip and clearance handle that terrain in a way a scooter can't, and no tour bus goes near it. It also means you can string together the whole southern loop — Lamai village, the fishing boats at Hua Thanon, the hill viewpoints above the bay — in a single day, on your own schedule, without waiting on taxis.

Top 10 things to see in Lamai Beach by quad bike

  1. Hin Ta Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks) — the naturally-shaped rock formation at the southern end of Lamai Beach, an easy first stop right off your route.
  2. Na Muang Waterfall 1 — a short inland ride from Lamai to a waterfall with an easy approach and a good swimming pool underneath.
  3. Na Muang Waterfall 2 — taller and steeper, further up the same access road, reachable on the connecting track that a quad handles comfortably.
  4. Secret Buddha Garden — a hillside garden of statues tucked into the Samui highlands, one of the island's classic quad routes.
  5. Wat Khunaram — a temple known for the mummified monk seated in a glass case, worth the short detour.
  6. Jungle Club viewpoint — a hilltop lookout above Chaweng and Lamai, reached by a steep dirt road that's half the fun of getting there.
  7. Ban Hua Thanon — a Muslim fishing village south of Lamai, its harbour full of colourful boats and a pleasant stretch of coastal road to reach it.
  8. Coral Cove — a small, scenic cove beach tucked between Lamai and Chaweng, good for a quick stop.
  9. Lamai Viewpoint — a roadside lookout in the hills near Pum Riang, looking back down over Lamai Bay.
  10. Wat Lamai and the Lamai Cultural Hall — a small temple and local heritage hall right in Lamai village, an easy stop before you head for the hills.

What do you need to rent a quad bike in Lamai Beach?

Thailand doesn't register quad bikes for public roads, so most Lamai rentals run as off-road tours or private-track hire rather than street rentals, and licence requirements are set by the individual operator. If you do plan to take a quad on any road-legal stretch, you'll need the appropriate driving entitlement, and it's worth carrying your home licence together with an International Driving Permit just in case. Most operators set their own minimum age, generally 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit — it's better to offer a cash deposit or a copy of your passport rather than hand over the original.

How much does it cost to rent a quad bike in Lamai Beach?

A standard single-seat quad runs roughly 600–900 THB per day in low season and 1,000–1,600 THB per day in high season, while larger 300cc-plus or two-seat buggy-style models go for 1,800–2,500 THB per day.

  • Prices peak in December–January, the Christmas and New Year rush.
  • They drop lowest around May–June and again in September–October, the quieter, rainier months.

When to book a rental quad bike in Lamai Beach?

High season on Koh Samui runs November through February, and this is when Lamai gets busiest and prices for a quad bike rental in Lamai Beach climb, so book a few days ahead if you're arriving over the Christmas or New Year period. The Gulf islands actually see their wettest stretch around October–December, a bit later than the rest of Thailand, so if you want dry trails to the waterfalls and viewpoints, aim for the January–February window. Low season from May through October brings the best prices and thinner crowds, though afternoon downpours can turn the hill tracks slippery, so check conditions before heading up to Jungle Club or Na Muang 2.

Local traffic rules in Lamai Beach

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike and checkpoints around Koh Samui do enforce this with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and rise on rural roads, though most of Lamai's inland routes are slow going by nature of the terrain. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and riding without a helmet or the correct entitlement can void your rental insurance, so it pays to play it safe on the hill tracks.

If you wish to rent a quad bike without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.

When you make an online quad bike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, goggles, gloves, individual guide or instructor, photo and video service of your ride, transfer to the starting point of your ride, full insurance, delivery to the address you choose.
