Picture the road curving along the water, islands rising out of Ha Long Bay on one side and the city humming on the other — that's the kind of drive you get when you rent a quad bike in Ha Long. Head up to the viewpoint on Bai Tho hill at sunset and the whole bay turns gold, or point yourself down the coastal road toward Bai Chay Beach with the bridge over Cua Luc framed ahead of you. A quad gives you the range to link these moments together in one afternoon instead of picking just one.
Ha Long's sights are strung along a long, curving bay-front split by the water crossing between Bai Chay and Hon Gai, with distances too big for walking but roads wide and calm enough to enjoy rather than fight through. Traffic here is far lighter than in Hanoi, so a quad bike feels stable and easy even if you've never ridden one before, and it opens up the causeway out to Tuan Chau Island or a longer loop inland toward Yen Tu for anyone chasing more distance.
Quad bikes sit outside Vietnam's normal road-licensing rules — they're mostly used on set routes with a rental shop keeping an eye on riders rather than checking a licence, so requirements are set by the shop rather than the law. Expect a minimum age around 18, and bring your passport or an International Driving Permit, since most shops will ask for ID and hold a deposit for the duration of your rental. Deposit amounts vary by shop and by how new the quad is, so it's worth asking upfront.
During low season, expect around 390,000–420,000 VND per day. In high season this climbs to roughly 550,000–750,000 VND per day, and newer or larger quads — or multi-hour guided tours — can run 800,000 VND to over 1,000,000 VND per day.
High season runs December to March, driven by cool, dry weather and a sharp spike around Tet in late January or February — book ahead if you're travelling then, since bikes get scarce. Low season falls between May and August, when the heat and rain thin out the crowds and daily rates drop, though weekends can still fill up with domestic travellers. Either way, reserving a day or two in advance keeps your options open.
Vietnam drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider on a motorised vehicle — this is enforced routinely, so wear one even for a short ride. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone driving, with roadside checks common at night and around holidays, so save the drinks for after you've parked. Speed limits are lower inside town than on open roads and are always signposted, so read the signs as you go rather than guessing a number.
