Picture swapping the crowded pavements of Bari Vecchia for open road, with the Adriatic on one side and the whitewashed roofs of Polignano a Mare ahead. That's what a quad-bike gives you here: a fast, flexible way to trade the old town's medieval lanes for the coast road south, stopping wherever the view demands it. One morning you're weaving past the Basilica di San Nicola, and by lunchtime you're parked above the cliffs at Lama Monachile with a gelato in hand.
Bari itself is built for walking, not driving — the alleys of the old town are pedestrian-only, and a car would be more hassle than it's worth. A quad solves the problem the other way round: it's compact enough for easy parking at cliffside viewpoints cars can't reach, and capable enough for the 30-60 km hops down to Polignano and Monopoli, or inland to the trulli of Alberobello and the underground galleries at Castellana. Good rural asphalt and manageable distances make it one of the most practical ways to combine a coastal cruise and a countryside detour in a single day.
Requirements depend on the machine: lighter quadricycles can be ridden on a moped-level (AM) licence, while heavier or more powerful models need at least a B1 or full car (B) licence — the rental operator will tell you which class their vehicle falls under. Most companies set their own minimum age, usually 18, on top of the legal minimum. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Expect to leave a deposit, normally as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the vehicle, and many operators also ask to hold a copy of your passport or ID.
Average rental prices run from 15-25 EUR per day in low season up to 40-70 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 80-120 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, when demand along the Adriatic coast is at its strongest and prices climb with it — book ahead if you're arriving in July or August. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and lower daily rates, though some seasonal outlets scale back their hours. May, June, September and early October tend to offer the best balance: warm, dry days without the midsummer crowds or heat.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, and higher on dual carriageways and motorways, though quadricycles may face lower caps depending on their class. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone who has held a licence for less than three years. Keep dipped headlights on at all times, and be aware that Bari Vecchia's historic core falls under ZTL restricted-traffic rules — ride the coast road instead and save the old town for exploring on foot.
