Hue rewards you the moment you leave the main road. Follow the Perfume River at your own pace, past the citadel walls of the Imperial City, out to the incense-colored bend where Thien Mu Pagoda catches the afternoon light, and you start to understand why so many travelers rent a motorbike here instead of booking a bus tour. Hue is a city built for wandering, and a scooter gets you into the corners a coach never will.

The royal tombs that make Hue famous are scattered 5 to 15 km apart across river and hillside, close enough to feel connected, far too far to walk between comfortably. Add the fact that traffic here moves at a far gentler pace than the scrum of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, and Hue turns out to be one of the easiest Vietnamese cities to ride in. Once you're confident on two wheels, the real prize opens up: a day trip over the Hai Van Pass, or a cool morning in Bach Ma National Park, neither of which a taxi driver will do on your schedule.

Top 10 things to see in Hue by motorbike

  1. Imperial City (Hoàng Thành / Đại Nội) — the walled Nguyen dynasty citadel at the heart of Hue, and the anchor sight of any visit.
  2. Thien Mu Pagoda — an iconic riverside pagoda on the Perfume River, a short scenic ride from downtown.
  3. Tomb of Khai Dinh (Lăng Khải Định) — an ornate hillside royal tomb with mosaic interiors, a classic stop on the tomb loop.
  4. Tomb of Tu Duc (Lăng Tự Đức) — a serene lake-and-pine tomb complex, one of the most photogenic in Hue.
  5. Tomb of Minh Mang (Lăng Minh Mạng) — a formal garden-tomb across the river, loved for its symmetry and greenery.
  6. Hai Van Pass — the legendary coastal mountain pass toward Da Nang, a bucket-list ride for any motorbike traveler.
  7. Thuan An Beach — a nearby coastal escape where the Perfume River meets the sea, an easy afternoon ride.
  8. Lang Co Beach — a turquoise lagoon-side beach en route to Hai Van Pass, worth a longer day trip.
  9. Bach Ma National Park — a cool mountain retreat with waterfalls and viewpoints, a favorite half-day ride from Hue.
  10. Vong Canh Hill (Đồi Vọng Cảnh) — a hilltop viewpoint over the Perfume River, best saved for sunset.

What do you need to rent a motorbike in Hue?

For a scooter under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Go above that and you'll need a motorcycle licence, plus a Vietnamese licence or a 1968-convention International Driving Permit if you're a foreigner (note: a US, Japanese or other 1949 Geneva-style IDP won't be accepted). Rental shops typically set their own minimum age, usually 18 even for smaller bikes. Expect to leave a cash deposit, or occasionally your passport as security — amounts vary by shop and by bike.

How much does it cost to rent a motorbike in Hue?

A standard automatic scooter runs around 625,000 VND per day in low season, rising to 800,000–1,000,000+ VND in high season. Step up to a larger or newer 150cc+ automatic and you're looking at 1,000,000–1,500,000+ VND per day.

  • Prices peak around December–January (Tet holidays) and June–August (peak summer travel).
  • Prices are friendliest in February–April and September–October, when the weather is good and the calendar is quiet.

When to book a rental motorbike in Hue?

Book well ahead if you're arriving in high season — broadly November through April, with Tet (late January to mid-February) the tightest squeeze, when bikes get scarce and some shops close for the holiday. For lighter demand and lower prices, aim for February to April or September to October, Hue's shoulder-season sweet spot. Central Vietnam's own low season, roughly September to November, brings typhoon and flood risk, so keep an eye on the forecast if you book then.

Local traffic rules in Hue

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorbike or scooter, and police do check. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for riders, enforced with roadside breath tests, especially at night. Speed limits are lower in town than on the open road and lower for motorbikes than for cars — follow the posted signs rather than assuming a flat number. Headlights are required at night, motorbikes are barred from expressways, and you can only turn on red where a sign or green arrow specifically allows it.
