If someday you will be in Hue, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a motorcycle in Hue on our website and explore this former imperial capital and its surroundings at your own pace — wandering the moated Citadel by day, riding along the Perfume River at sunset, or climbing south over the Hai Van Pass toward the coast. A motorcycle is by far the best way to reach the scattered royal tombs, the lagoon villages and the mountain roads that lie well beyond the reach of a city taxi.

Hue is spread out along the Perfume River, with its main sights separated by distances that suit two wheels far better than walking. Traffic is calmer here than in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, the roads to the royal tombs run through quiet countryside, and the famous pass south of the city is one of the best rides in the country. A motorcycle lets you link all of it together in a single day, or spread it out over several unhurried ones.

Top 10 things to see in Hue by motorcycle

  1. Imperial Citadel — the walled and moated seat of the Nguyen emperors, with the Forbidden Purple City at its heart; park outside and explore on foot.
  2. Thien Mu Pagoda — Hue’s iconic seven-storey pagoda on the banks of the Perfume River, especially beautiful at sunset.
  3. Tomb of Khai Dinh — an ornate hillside mausoleum blending Vietnamese and European styles, a striking ride up a long stone stairway.
  4. Tomb of Tu Duc — a serene, forested royal tomb complex with a lake and pavilions, one of the most atmospheric in Hue.
  5. Tomb of Minh Mang — a formally landscaped complex of courtyards and bridges, a little further from the centre and worth the ride.
  6. Perfume River — the river that threads through the city; the road along its banks is a relaxed ride at any time of day.
  7. Thuan An Beach — a lagoon-side beach a short ride east of the city, popular with locals for seafood and a swim.
  8. Hai Van Pass — the legendary coastal climb south toward Da Nang, with sweeping views over the South China Sea.
  9. Tam Giang Lagoon — Southeast Asia’s largest lagoon system, with fishing villages and quiet backroads worth exploring.
  10. Bach Ma National Park — forested mountains south of the city with waterfalls and cool air, a scenic half-day loop from Hue.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Hue?

Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for engines up to 125cc an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger motorcycles call for a full A-class licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the motorcycle in good condition.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Hue?

Motorcycle rental in Hue starts from around 650,000 VND per day for a mid-size machine and runs up to roughly 1,100,000–1,350,000 VND per day for a bigger or newer model. What you pay depends on the engine size and, importantly, on the time of year. Prices in Hue follow a fairly clear seasonal pattern:

  • February–August (high/dry season) — warm, settled weather and the busiest months for travel, so rates sit at the higher end.
  • September–December (low/rainy season) — heavy rain and a real risk of flooding around the Citadel and the Perfume River, quieter for tourism, and the best time for a lower daily rate.

Within any season, weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are the real peak — that is when the cheapest bikes sell out first and prices edge up. Book a few days ahead to lock in the best rate.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Hue?

The dry season, from February to August, is by far the most comfortable time to ride, with warm days and calm roads to the royal tombs and the coast. The rainy season runs from September to December, when Hue’s low-lying streets near the Perfume River can flood after heavy storms and the Hai Van Pass becomes slippery, so October and November are best avoided if you can. If you want the most pleasant riding weather, aim for spring or early summer; if you want the best price and don’t mind the odd shower, the shoulder months either side of the rains are a fair compromise. Either way, book a few days in advance to guarantee availability.

Local traffic rules

In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h, rising on the open roads toward the tombs and the Hai Van Pass. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Hue’s traffic is generally calmer than Vietnam’s big cities, but river crossings and roundabouts near the Citadel can get busy. Ride defensively, keep your lights on, use your horn lightly to signal your presence rather than in anger, and take unfamiliar junctions gently until you feel comfortable in the flow.
