Trogir's old town is best left on foot — but the moment you cross back over its stone bridges, a scooter turns this stretch of the Dalmatian coast into your own playground. Ride out to the beach bars of Okrug Gornji on Čiovo, then loop up to Klis Fortress for a hilltop view over the whole Split hinterland. Along the way you'll pass coves and konobas that the tour buses never stop for.
Trogir's UNESCO-listed core is pedestrian and largely car-free, which is lovely to walk but useless if you actually want to reach the beaches, coast roads and nearby towns that make this region worth visiting. In peak summer the narrow roads to Čiovo and along the Seget and Kaštela coast clog with traffic, and parking near the old town gets scarce. A scooter slips through all of that, parks anywhere, and turns what would be a frustrating drive into a quick, breezy hop — ideal for stringing together a day of swimming stops and short sightseeing detours.
Unlike Italy or Spain, a plain car licence isn't enough here: for anything above 50cc you need at least an A1 motorcycle category, while a moped licence (category AM) covers 50cc scooters. Bring the physical card, since agencies match the bike to what your licence allows. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, carry an International Driving Permit as well. Most agencies expect riders to be at least 18, and you'll need to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card and released when the scooter comes back undamaged.
A basic 50cc scooter runs about 5–10 EUR per day in low season (November to March) and climbs to 20–35 EUR per day in July and August. Larger or newer scooters and mopeds (125cc and up) go for roughly 30–50 EUR per day at the height of summer.
If you're coming in July or August, book ahead — stock along the coast sells out fast and prices sit at their highest. Outside that window, from November to March, several shops close for winter entirely, though the ones that stay open charge noticeably less. For the easiest riding and best prices together, aim for May, June, or September.
Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 130 km/h on motorways — though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to zero for drivers under 25. Scooters and motorcycles must run with headlights on at all times, day and night. Ready to explore at your own pace?
