Split may get all the postcards, but hop off the ferry at Trogir and cross the little bridge onto Čiovo, and the island feels like a secret you're in on. Rent a scooter on Čiovo and you can be at the pebbles of Okrug Gornji within minutes, then peel off down the coast toward the quieter shade of Bristol Beach or the clear water at Saldun before lunch. In the evening, loop back over the bridge for a sunset drink under the walls of Fort Kamerlengo — all without once checking a bus timetable.

Čiovo is barely six kilometres long, but its coastal roads are narrow, twisty and, come July, jammed with rental cars hunting for parking that mostly doesn't exist. A scooter slips through that traffic and tucks into spaces a car never could, which makes scooter rental in Čiovo the easiest way to string together beaches, villages and Trogir's old streets in a single afternoon. It also puts Split within reach for a proper day trip, without waiting on the island's thin local bus service.

Top 10 things to see in Čiovo by scooter

  1. Trogir Old Town (UNESCO) — the historic core just across the bridge, with the Cathedral of St. Lawrence and stone lanes barely five minutes from Čiovo.
  2. Fort Kamerlengo — a 15th-century Venetian fortress on Trogir's waterfront, a quick scoot away and one of the best places to watch the sun go down.
  3. Okrug Gornji (Copacabana Beach) — the island's liveliest beach strip, all pebbles, bars and clubs, on a flat easy road from most rental points.
  4. Bristol Beach — a shadier, calmer stretch right next to Copacabana for when you want the same area with less noise.
  5. Saldun Beach — a pebble beach on the south coast with clear water, reached along a short coastal ride.
  6. Duga Beach, Slatine — a long sandy-pebble beach near Slatine on the island's quieter north side, worth the crossing.
  7. Slatine village — a small fishing village with its own ferry to Split, and a scenic route to get there.
  8. Čiovo Bridge (Trogirski most) — the link back to the mainland and the natural start and end point of most rides.
  9. Marina — a small harbour town a short ride up the coast, good for a quiet lunch away from the crowds.
  10. Split Old Town — Diocletian's Palace, about 20–25 minutes by road, a favourite longer day trip for anyone who's rented a scooter here.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Čiovo?

Croatia treats scooters more strictly than some neighbouring countries: a plain car licence is not enough. For anything over 50cc you'll need at least an A1 motorcycle licence, or category AM if you're sticking to a true moped. Riders are generally expected to be at least 18, and a deposit — usually a card hold, released undamaged on return — is standard practice. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with the physical card.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Čiovo?

Prices swing hard with the season. Expect around EUR 5–15 per day in the quiet months, EUR 20–35 per day in high season, and EUR 35–50 per day for a premium model.

  • Cheapest: November to March.
  • Dearest: July and August, when demand along the coast peaks.

When to book a rental scooter in Čiovo?

June through August is Croatia's high season, and July–August is the peak of the peak — book ahead, because island rental stock does sell out. May, June and September into early October are our pick for riding: warm, dry, and free of the summer crush. Winter (November to March) is the low season, when many island rental shops close altogether, though the ones that stay open charge noticeably less.

Local traffic rules in Čiovo

Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions, and headlights stay on day and night year-round on two wheels. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to zero for drivers under 25 — and checks are common on the coastal roads around Trogir in summer.
