Mljet feels like the version of the Adriatic everyone talks about but few actually reach. Once you roll off the ferry at Sobra or Polače, the island opens up into empty coastal road, pine forest and the turquoise loop of the national park — and a scooter is the easiest way to see all of it in a single day, from the ruins at Polače harbour to the sheltered bay at Soline.

The island is long, narrow and mostly free of traffic, with one main road running its length and a paved lake loop inside the national park. Distances between the good stuff — Pomena, Polače, Saplunara — are too far to walk but short by scooter, and you can duck past the tour groups and park right at trailheads like Montokuc that coach buses can't reach.

Top 10 things to see in Mljet by scooter

  1. Nacionalni park Mljet – Veliko i Malo Jezero (Great and Small Lake) — the island's signature sight, two saltwater lakes ringed by a paved loop road that makes for the classic scooter route through the park.
  2. Otočić Sveta Marija (St. Mary's Islet) — a small islet in the middle of Veliko Jezero with a Benedictine monastery, reached by the park's boat shuttle from Pristanište, where riders leave their scooters.
  3. Odisejeva špilja (Odysseus' Cave) — a sea cave near Babine Kuće with a swimmable pool of turquoise water, a short ride and a scramble down from the south-coast road.
  4. Pomena — the harbour village that forms the north entrance to the national park, with cafés and boats moored along the water.
  5. Polače — the ferry port and the park's other entrance, with Roman palace ruins sitting right on the harbourfront.
  6. Soline — a sheltered sandy-shingle bay inside the park and a favourite swim stop along the lakes road.
  7. Saplunara — sandy beaches near the island's southeastern tip, further out but worth the ride for the best sand on Mljet.
  8. Sobra — the main ferry port linking Mljet to Dubrovnik and the mainland, and usually where your rental journey begins.
  9. Montokuc — a hilltop lookout inside the park with views over both lakes, reached via a marked path off the lakeside road.
  10. Babino Polje — the island's largest settlement, spread across several hamlets, a good inland stop for coffee on a longer ride.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Mljet?

Croatia treats scooters differently from neighbouring Italy or Spain — a plain car licence isn't enough. For anything over 50cc you need at least an A1 motorcycle category; a moped licence (category AM) covers 50cc machines. Riders from outside the EU/EEA should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Most agencies expect you to be at least 18, and you'll leave a refundable deposit, either a card hold or cash, released when you bring the scooter back undamaged.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Mljet?

A basic 50cc scooter runs EUR 5-8 per day in low season and EUR 15-25 per day in high season. Step up to a larger-cc scooter or an e-scooter with more range and you're looking at EUR 30-45 per day.

  • Cheapest around April-May and October, once the summer crowds thin out.
  • Most expensive in July and August, the peak of the Adriatic season.

When to book a rental scooter in Mljet?

June through August is high season on Mljet, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks — book ahead if you're travelling then, since stock on a small island runs out fast. November to March is low season, when many island rental shops close for winter altogether. For the best balance of good weather, open roads and lower prices, aim for May, June, September or early October.

Local traffic rules in Mljet

Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, no exceptions, and scooters must run with headlights on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though a 45cc moped is capped at its own top speed regardless. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most riders, but zero tolerance applies if you're under 25.
