Pula rewards anyone who trades the bus timetable for two wheels. Picture rolling up to the Pula Arena in the morning light before the tour buses arrive, then coasting down to the Verudela Peninsula for a swim in a rocky cove by early afternoon. Rent a scooter in Pula and the whole Istrian coast opens up — from the fishing boats of Fažana to the wild cliffs of Cape Kamenjak — at whatever pace you set for yourself.
The old town's lanes were laid out long before cars existed, so parking near the Forum or the Arena is genuinely painful in a rental car. A scooter slips through that same tangle and tucks into a corner near the sights, then just as easily turns a 30-40 minute detour to Kamenjak or a coastal run past Medulin into an easy afternoon. Distances between Pula's best spots are too long for walking in the summer sun but perfectly built for a scooter hop, and a bike hire in Pula gets you parking spots that cars simply don't have, right at the beach or the viewpoint.
Croatia treats scooters more strictly than some of its neighbours: a plain car licence is not enough. For anything up to 50cc you need a moped licence (category AM), and above that, at least category A1. Most agencies also ask that you be at least 18. Expect to leave a deposit, either on your card or in cash, released when the scooter comes back undamaged, and if your licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it.
A scooter rental in Pula runs from roughly 5 to 15 EUR per day in low season, climbing to 20-30 EUR per day in high season. Newer or larger scooters, 125cc and up, can reach 30-45 EUR per day at the height of summer.
High season runs June to August, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks on the whole Adriatic coast. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and some shops shut for winter entirely. If you want warm, dry riding weather without the crowds or the premium price tag, May, June, September and early October hit that sweet spot.
Croatia drives on the right, and helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads outside town; a moped is capped at 45 km/h and can't go on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most riders, but zero tolerance applies if you're under 25. Scooters and motorcycles must ride with headlights on at all times, day and night. Police checks for speed and alcohol are common along the coast in summer, so keep it steady and enjoy the ride. Once you're ready, just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a scooter in Pula. Have a nice trip!
