Pula rewards anyone willing to cover a bit of ground under their own power. The old town sits compact around the Pula Arena, but the coast unspools for kilometres beyond it — past the beaches of Verudela, down to the cliffs of Cape Kamenjak, out to the fishing harbour at Fažana. Cover it on two wheels and you get the whole run: Roman ruins in the morning, a swim in a hidden cove by afternoon.

Pula suits cycling better than most Istrian towns. The centre is flat and easy to navigate, while the routes linking its best spots — Kamenjak, Verudela, Fažana — hug the coastline on paved or hard-packed paths rather than climbing inland. Outside the July–August crush, traffic stays light, so a casual rider can string together a full day of sightseeing without fighting for road space or hunting for parking.

Top 10 things to see in Pula by bike

  1. Pula Arena — the Roman amphitheatre anchoring the city centre, a natural start and finish for any ride
  2. Cape Kamenjak (Rt Kamenjak) — a wild nature park south of Premantura with dirt tracks, cliffs and coves, perfect for a bike-and-swim loop
  3. Verudela Peninsula — a flat, paved coastal path past beaches and hotels, easy going from the centre
  4. Fort Punta Christo — an Austro-Hungarian fortress near Verudela with sea views, known for its festival grounds
  5. Golden Gate (Arch of the Sergii) — a Roman triumphal arch in the old town, worth a quick photo stop
  6. Temple of Augustus — a well-preserved Roman temple on the main square
  7. Zerostrasse tunnels — WWI tunnels beneath the old town, a shaded curiosity break
  8. Fažana waterfront — a small fishing town and ferry point north of Pula, pleasant riding along the coast
  9. Brijuni National Park — reached by ferry from Fažana, the way most visitors combine cycling with an island trip
  10. Premantura village and bay — the gateway to Kamenjak, with a calm bay and cafés for a rest stop

What do you need to rent a bike in Pula?

None of it takes a licence — anyone can rent a bicycle in Croatia regardless of age or driving experience. Most agencies in Pula will still ask for ID and take a small deposit, usually held on a card and released when you bring the bike back undamaged. No international driving permit applies here since it's a bicycle, not a motor vehicle.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Pula?

Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 3–6 EUR per day for a standard bike, rising to 8–15 EUR per day in high season. If you'd rather ride an e-bike or a higher-end model, expect around 20–35 EUR per day.

  • July and August are the most expensive months on the coast
  • November to March brings the lowest rates, though some rentals scale back or close for winter
  • April–May and September–October sit in between, with shoulder-season pricing

When to book a rental bike in Pula?

If you want the best value, aim for the shoulder months — April, May, September or October — when the weather is still good but prices haven't hit their peak. Booking ahead matters most in July and August, when demand along the Istrian coast is at its highest and the cheaper bikes go first. Outside summer, especially November through March, you can usually find a bike with little notice, though it pays to check which rentals are actually open.

Local traffic rules in Pula

Croatia drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Riders under 16 must wear a helmet, and it's a sensible habit at any age. If you're out after dark or riding outside built-up areas in poor visibility, Croatian law requires working front and rear lights plus a reflective vest. Speed limits in town top out at 50 km/h, so drivers are used to sharing the road at a reasonable pace, but stay alert near the busier junctions in the old town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most riders, with zero tolerance for anyone under 25 — worth keeping in mind if a coastal ride ends at a konoba with a glass of wine.

Which insurance is provided with my rental bicycle?

Some include simple loss or damage protection in the price, while others cover it through your deposit; always check the exact terms on the booking page before you confirm.
