Zadar rewards anyone willing to pedal. Freewheel along the Riva at golden hour and you will catch the Sea Organ humming under the waves and the Greeting to the Sun flickering awake as the sky turns pink — two sights best experienced slowly, with the wind off the Adriatic instead of a bus timetable. From there it is a short, flat run to the Roman Forum in the old town, or further afield to the salt flats and beaches of Nin.
What makes this such an easy place to ride is the geography. The old town peninsula is car-free and pancake-flat, so a bike gets you from the Forum to the waterfront faster than walking and without dodging tour groups. Outside the walls, the coast north and south stays mostly level too, which means Kolovare Beach, Borik, Puntamika and even the longer haul to Nin are realistic half-day trips rather than expeditions — no serious hills to fight, just open road and sea views.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Zadar — anyone can ride one, regardless of age or driving experience. Most rental shops will still ask for photo ID, and some take a small deposit, either on a card or in cash, refunded when the bike comes back undamaged. There is no need for an International Driving Permit, since a bicycle rental has nothing to do with your driving licence.
Expect around 3-5 EUR per day in low season, rising to 8-15 EUR per day in high season. If you want an e-bike or a premium hybrid or road bike, budget 15-25 EUR per day.
July and August are Zadar's high season, when the town fills up and bike rental prices sit at their yearly peak — booking a few days ahead is wise. For lower prices and quieter streets, May, June, September and even early October are excellent, with warm weather but none of the midsummer crush. Low season runs November to March, when prices drop furthest but some shops scale back their hours.
Croatia drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Riders under 16 must wear a helmet, and it is a sensible habit at any age. If you are out after dark or riding outside town in poor visibility, Croatian law requires working front and rear lights plus a reflective vest. Speed limits for other traffic are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though on a bike you will rarely approach either. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most drivers on the road, with zero tolerance for anyone under 25 — worth keeping in mind if cycling back from a evening out along the Riva.
