Šolta rewards anyone willing to pedal a little. Picture rolling down from the ridge road into Maslinica, where a small castle overlooks a marina scattered with islets, or freewheeling into Stomorska on the east coast, a fishing village of stone quays and tavernas that still feels like it belongs to the fishermen rather than the tourists. On a bicycle you set the pace for all of it, stopping wherever the view or the water asks you to.

The island is only about 19km end to end, strung along a single ridge road with short lanes dropping to each coastal village, so nothing is ever far away. Traffic is thin once summer's peak weeks pass, and there is no need to time your day around the limited bus schedule. The trade-off is the climbing: the spine road has real gradients, so a lower gear or an e-bike makes the ridge sections far more pleasant.

Top 10 things to see in Šolta by bicycle

  1. Rogac — the island's main ferry port and the natural start or finish for a loop around Šolta.
  2. Grohote — the inland hub village, where routes fan out toward every stretch of coast.
  3. Maslinica — a westernmost harbor village with a small castle and marina, close to the Sceved islets.
  4. Sesula Bay — a sheltered cove just past Maslinica, a quiet coastal detour off the main road.
  5. Necujam Bay — the island's largest bay, once a monastic retreat, with several coves worth exploring along its shore.
  6. Vela Straza — Šolta's high point, a climb that pays off with a panoramic view over the Split channel.
  7. Gornje Selo — a quiet ridge-road village linking Grohote to the north coast.
  8. Livka viewpoint — a lookout along the spine road with open sea views toward the mainland.
  9. Senjska Bay — a small beach cove reachable by a short ride, a good spot to break up the loop with a swim.
  10. Stomorska — an old fishing village on the east coast, with a stone waterfront and a handful of tavernas.

What do you need to rent a bicycle in Šolta?

None of this needs a licence — anyone can ride a bicycle in Croatia, no card, no category, no international driving permit. Riders under 16 do need a helmet by law, and if you'll be out after dark or in poor visibility outside town, working front and rear lights plus a reflective vest are required. Most operators still ask for ID and a small deposit, refunded when the bike comes back in one piece.

How much does it cost to rent a bicycle in Šolta?

Expect to pay 3-5 EUR per day in low season and 8-15 EUR per day in high season for a standard bicycle; e-bikes, which make real sense on Šolta's climbs, run 15-25 EUR per day.

  • Prices are lowest from November to March, when demand on the island drops off almost entirely.
  • They climb steadily through spring and peak in July and August, the busiest and priciest stretch of the year.

When to book a rental bicycle in Šolta?

July and August are Šolta's high season, when the island fills up and bikes go fast — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. From November to March things are quiet and cheap, though some shops scale back for winter. May, June and September sit in between: warm, uncrowded, and a comfortable time to book just a day or two out.

Local traffic rules in Šolta

Croatia drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Riders under 16 must wear a helmet, and Šolta's ridge road can carry cars and scooters at speed, so staying visible matters, especially at dusk. Built-up areas are capped at 50 km/h for motor traffic, so you'll rarely be sharing the road with anything fast. If you're renting alongside a scooter or car for part of your trip, remember the blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, with zero tolerance for drivers under 25.
