Menton's old town spills down toward the harbour in tiers of ochre and pink, and the best way to see all of it in a single afternoon is from the seat of a scooter. Ride the flat sweep of the Promenade du Soleil past Plage des Sablettes, then park at the port and climb on foot into the Vieille Ville, where the lanes narrow and twist up to the Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange. From there it's a short hop up to Sainte-Agnès, one of the highest coastal villages in Europe, with the sea laid out below you the whole way up.
This is exactly the kind of town where a car becomes a liability and walking becomes a chore. The old town's alleys are too tight for four wheels, parking near the centre is scarce, and the hairpin roads climbing to Sainte-Agnès or Gorbio eat up time on foot but disappear in minutes on two wheels. A scooter also means you can duck into Italy at Ventimiglia for lunch, or swing along the corniche to Cap Martin, without ever hunting for a parking spot.
For a 50cc scooter you need an AM licence, which anyone with a full car licence already holds. For a 125cc model you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence, or a category B car licence held for at least two years plus a short training course. Rental agencies in Menton usually ask for a minimum age of 18, sometimes higher for bigger machines, and will take a deposit by card pre-authorisation, refunded when the scooter comes back undamaged. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence.
Expect to pay around EUR 5-15 per day in low season, rising to EUR 25-40 per day in high season, with premium models running EUR 40-60 per day.
July and August are Menton's busiest and priciest months, so reserve your scooter rental in Menton well in advance if you're coming then. If you'd rather ride in peace and pay less, aim for May, June or September, when the weather is still warm but the crowds and prices drop. Low season runs November to March, with the cheapest rates of the year but a much quieter town.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, and gloves are a legal requirement too — an unusual French rule that's actively enforced. Keep your headlight on at all times, even in daylight. Speed limits drop to 50 km/h in town and are lower still on the winding roads up to Sainte-Agnès and Gorbio, so take the hairpins slowly. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to effectively zero if you're within your first three years of holding a licence.
