Trang doesn't get the crowds that pile into Phuket or Samui, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on two wheels. Picture yourself riding out past the karst hills toward Pak Meng Beach, the wind picking up as the road opens onto the coast, or winding inland to cool off under the Khao Chong Waterfall before continuing to the piers where longboats leave for the islands. A scooter here isn't just transport — it's what turns a scattered handful of beaches, jungle and old railway towns into one connected trip.

Trang town and the coast around it were built for this kind of exploring. The beaches, piers and waterfalls sit 20 to 40 minutes apart on quiet rural roads, distances that are exhausting on foot and inconvenient by songthaew but effortless once you're riding yourself. Traffic here is a fraction of what you'd fight in Phuket, and having your own wheels also gets you to the piers for Koh Mook and Koh Kradan, island day-trips that public transport simply doesn't reach.

Top 10 things to see in Trang by motorcycle

  1. Pak Meng Beach — the main jumping-off beach near town, with a long stretch of sand and boats to the islands, an easy first ride from Trang.
  2. Hat Chao Mai National Park — a coastal park of quiet beaches, mangroves and limestone karsts along the road from Pak Meng toward Sikao.
  3. Khao Chong Waterfall & Wildlife Education Centre — a rainforest waterfall and nature centre a short ride inland, ideal for cooling off with a jungle walk.
  4. Kantang Old Railway Station — southern Thailand's first railway station, a well-preserved colonial-era building south of town.
  5. Trang Old Town — the Sino-Portuguese shophouses and clock tower along Thanon Rachadamnoen make for an easy in-town heritage loop.
  6. Sikao coastal road — the scenic stretch linking Trang town to Sikao and Pak Meng, with sea views for most of the ride.
  7. Pier to Koh Mook — park your bike and take a longboat out to swim into the famous Emerald Cave.
  8. Pier to Koh Kradan — the mainland access point for one of Trang's most photographed islands.
  9. Koh Libong — a short ferry hop away, known for dugong sightings and sleepy fishing villages.
  10. Namtok Ngao National Park — a multi-tiered waterfall that makes a satisfying half-day loop from Trang town.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Trang?

You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops rent without checking, but police checkpoints do, and your insurance is void without it. Most rentals set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Trang?

A standard automatic scooter runs around 900-1,000 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 1,200-1,500 THB in high season. Larger-CC or premium bikes cost more, typically 1,800-2,500 THB a day.

  • December and January are the priciest months, driven by the Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year crowds.
  • May-June and September-October, the rainy low season, bring the cheapest rates.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Trang?

High season runs November through February, when dry weather and calm seas make riding and island-hopping most comfortable — book a few days ahead if you're arriving in December or January. Low season, from May to October, brings lower prices and fewer crowds, though afternoon monsoon showers are common. If you can, avoid mid-April: Songkran is the most dangerous week of the year to be on two wheels.

Local traffic rules in Trang

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do enforce this with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural highways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside breath tests are routine, especially around holidays. Carry your licence, IDP and rental documents at all times, and watch for sand and loose gravel on coastal bends after rain.
