Rayong doesn't announce itself the way Phuket or Chiang Mai do, and that's exactly its charm. Rent a motorcycle here and the town opens up fast: a ride down to Ban Phe pier with the ferries loading for Ko Samet, a slow cruise along Mae Rumphueng Beach under rows of casuarina trees, or a stop for grilled seafood you'd never find without your own wheels. Locals loop Suan Son Pine Park on scooters every evening, and once you've done it yourself you'll understand why.
The city's attractions are scattered along a long coastal strip and up into the hills, well past comfortable walking or songthaew range. Traffic outside the town centre stays light and easy to read, which makes Rayong a forgiving place to ride independently. A motorcycle rental in Rayong means you set your own schedule — beach one hour, waterfall the next — instead of waiting on shared transport.
To rent a motorcycle in Rayong you'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and your insurance is void without the right paperwork. Most rental shops set their own minimum age, usually 18. Expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a copy of your passport rather than the original document itself.
A standard scooter runs around 900–1,000 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 1,200–1,600 THB during high season. Larger or premium motorcycles, 300cc and up, go for around 1,800–3,000 THB or more per day.
High season runs November through February, when dry, breezy weather brings the most riders and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches May to October through the southwest monsoon, with lighter demand and softer rates — a good window if you don't mind the odd afternoon shower. Booking a few days ahead is usually enough outside the December–January rush.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural highways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, tightened to 0.02% for under-20s and new licence holders, and roadside breath tests are common around holidays. Watch for sand and loose gravel on coastal bends, and slow down the moment a monsoon downpour hits — painted road markings get slippery fast.
