Picture swapping flip-flops for a helmet and cruising past longtail boats bobbing in Ton Sai Bay before the heat sets in. On Koh Phi Phi Don, a scooter turns a short hop between two coasts into an adventure: you can be sipping a coconut on Loh Dalum Bay one hour and climbing toward the island's viewpoints the next, watching the lagoon-blue water stretch out beneath the limestone cliffs. It's the kind of freedom that turns a quick stopover into the highlight of a Thailand trip.
Phi Phi Don is compact, and that's exactly what makes two wheels the right call here. The main routes link Ton Sai to Loh Dalum and on toward Long Beach, easy enough for a first-timer to handle, with none of the traffic snarls you'd fight on Phuket or Koh Samui. You'll get to the trailheads and lookout points faster than on foot, save the longer walks for the parts of the island cars can't reach, and still have time left for a boat trip out to the postcard bays beyond.
Thai law requires a motorcycle-category licence to ride legally — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and rental insurance is generally void without the right paperwork. Most operators set a minimum age of 18, and you'll be asked for a deposit; it's better to offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the original document itself.
Expect an average of around 950 THB per day in low season, climbing to roughly 1,100–1,400 THB during the busier months, with bigger automatic models running closer to 1,500–1,800 THB per day.
High season runs November to February, when the seas are calm, the skies are clear, and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from May to October with the southwest monsoon bringing regular downpours — fewer crowds and cheaper rentals, but pack a rain jacket. If you're after the atmosphere of high season without the premium price tag, aim for the shoulder weeks just before or after the November–February window.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and it's an easy fine to pick up if you skip one. Speed limits generally sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas, though on an island this size you'll rarely need to go anywhere near that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays — so save the beach bar visit for after you've parked the bike for the day.
