Bangkok rewards anyone willing to slip past the traffic on two wheels. Weave through the sois around the Grand Palace before the first tour buses arrive, drift along the river to catch Wat Arun glowing at sunset, or head into Yaowarat after dark when the neon signs and street-food carts light up Chinatown. A motorcycle turns a city that can swallow hours in gridlock into one you can cross in minutes, with the freedom to stop wherever something catches your eye.
Bangkok's sprawl and infamous congestion make a bike the fastest way to link temples, markets and riverside neighbourhoods that would otherwise cost you half a day in a taxi. It is nimble enough to duck down narrow sois cars can't reach, yet powerful enough to carry you out of the city entirely — across the river to the quiet green lanes of Bang Kachao, or up the highway to the ruins of Ayutthaya.
You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Shops rarely check closely, but police checkpoints do, and insurance is void without it. Most rentals set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit; offering cash or a passport photocopy is safer than handing over your actual passport.
A basic automatic scooter (100–125cc) runs from around 200 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 300–400 THB in high season. Bigger bikes, 300cc and up or well-known brands like Honda and Yamaha, typically cost 1,000–2,500 THB per day.
November to February is high season, when dry, cool weather draws the most visitors and prices sit at their highest. May to September is low season, with cheaper rates but more rain to plan around. Booking a little ahead during the November–February window is worth it if you want your pick of bikes at the best price.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, with fines issued on the spot for riding without one. Speed limits are around 60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 90 km/h on rural highways; motorcycles are banned from motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside checks are common, especially around public holidays. Keep your licence, IDP and rental documents on you at all times, and watch for bikes riding against traffic or hugging the shoulder in town.
