Picture this: the sun dipping behind the limestone karsts of Ao Nang, the road curving along the coast, and nowhere you need to be except wherever you point the handlebars. A morning ride out to Nopparat Thara Beach takes just five minutes along the shaded coastal promenade, and by afternoon you could be climbing toward the Ao Nang Viewpoint for a sunset over the bay and its scattered islands. This is a place built for two wheels, and once you rent a motorcycle here, the whole province opens up.
Ao Nang's real attractions — jungle pools, hilltop temples, hot springs — sit anywhere from 5 to 60 km out of town, scattered along winding coastal roads and karst country with little in the way of public transport. A rented motorcycle is how most visitors actually get to them. Traffic stays light outside the busiest hours, the roads are mostly paved, and a scooter or small-displacement bike is more than capable of handling the distances and the hills.
You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops rent without checking, but police checkpoints do, and your insurance is void without the right paperwork. Most rentals require you to be 18 or over, and a deposit is standard practice; we'd suggest offering cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than handing over the original.
Expect around 900–1,000 THB per day in low season for a well-equipped automatic scooter or small-displacement motorcycle, rising to roughly 1,300–1,600 THB per day at the height of the year. Basic manual scooters run cheaper, closer to 200–300 THB per day.
High season runs November through February, when the weather is at its best and demand — and prices — peak. Low season stretches May to October, through the southwest monsoon, with June and September the quietest and cheapest months to rent a scooter in Ao Nang. If your trip lands in mid-April, book a little earlier: Songkran brings crowds and a spike in prices even though it falls in the nominal low season.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do enforce this with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural highways outside it. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside breath tests are common, especially around holidays. Keep an eye out for sand and gravel on coastal bends, and slow down if a sudden downpour hits — painted road markings get slippery fast. Ready to see Krabi's coast and karsts for yourself?
