Picture the road down from Acireale to Santa Maria La Scala: a tight, twisting descent through lava rock that drops you at a tiny fishing hamlet before you've even had your morning coffee. That's the kind of ride you get here, and it's best done on two wheels. You can rent a motorcycle in Acireale on our website and use it to trace the whole Ionian coast, from the sea stacks at Aci Trezza to the volcano looming over everything behind you.
Acireale's old town wasn't built with cars in mind — the streets are narrow, steep and mostly one-way, and parking is scarce around the baroque centre. A scooter or motorcycle slips through all of that easily, and it's the only sensible way to handle the switchbacks down to Santa Maria La Scala. The same goes for the roads climbing Etna's lower slopes and the coastal Riviera dei Ciclopi: both reward you with easy stops and parking that a car simply can't match.
For anything up to 125cc you'll need at least an A1 licence; mid-power and full-size machines call for A2 or full A, with minimum ages rising accordingly. EU licences are accepted as issued, while licences from outside the EU need an International Driving Permit alongside them. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, sized to the value of the bike, and bring your passport or ID. Most operators set their own minimum age too, generally 18 or above.
Our listing starts around 25 EUR per day in low season for a standard scooter, and prices climb to roughly 40–55 EUR per day at the height of summer for a 125cc. Larger touring or sport motorcycles run higher, often 60–90 EUR per day or more.
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter week, when coastal Sicily fills up fast and prices follow. Low season stretches from November to March, when some seasonal outlets scale back or close, but rates are at their friendliest. If you're after the best riding weather without the July crowds and heat, aim for May, June, September or early October — and book ahead regardless, since bikes go quickly along this coast in summer.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or motorcycle, no exceptions, and headlights stay on at all times once you're on two wheels. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110–130 km/h on faster extra-urban roads and motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21 or who has held a licence less than three years. Watch for ZTL restricted zones in historic centres — ride into one without a permit and the fine arrives by post months later.
