Vicenza rewards travellers who slow down, and there is no better way to do that than from the saddle of a bicycle. Ride out from the arcades of Piazza dei Signori, glide beneath Palladio's Basilica, then climb gently toward the hilltop sanctuary of Monte Berico, where the whole city unfolds red-roofed below you. A bike lets you cover in an hour what would take half a day on foot, and it slips you past the tour groups clustered around the theatre and into the quieter streets where the real city lives.
The old town itself is compact, mostly flat and partly closed to cars, so a bicycle is genuinely the fastest way to see it — no parking to hunt for, no ZTL cameras to worry about. Push a little further and the ground starts to rise into the Colli Berici, the wine hills just south of the city, where the terrain turns from an easy roll into a proper workout. That range, from flat piazza to rolling countryside, is exactly why renting a bike in Vicenza works so well for almost any kind of visitor.
Standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes up to 25 km/h and 250 W need no licence, registration or insurance in Italy — they're simply treated as bicycles. Rental shops set their own minimum age and will normally ask for photo ID; an International Driving Permit is not needed for a standard bike. Expect to leave a refundable deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount scaled to the value of the bike.
A basic city bike runs EUR 3–8 per day in low season and EUR 10–20 per day in high season. Step up to an e-bike or road bike for the Colli Berici climbs and expect EUR 20–35 per day, whatever the season.
High season runs from June through August, plus the Easter period, and this is when bikes are priced highest and availability is tightest — book a few days ahead if you're visiting then. Low season, from November to March, is quieter and cheaper, though some smaller outlets trim their hours. For the best balance of mild weather and easy availability, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's sensible on the Colli Berici descents. If you head outside town after dark or through a tunnel, Italian law requires a reflective vest or jacket, plus working lights and reflectors from dusk onward. General road speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside towns — figures worth knowing if you're sharing a route with traffic on the way to Longare. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for those who've held a licence less than three years, so keep that in mind if you're combining a countryside ride with a Colli Berici vineyard stop.
