Palermo rewards anyone willing to explore it slowly, and there is no better way to do that than on two wheels. Ride down from the baroque crossroads of Quattro Canti toward the sea, and within twenty minutes you can be pedalling along the flat seafront of Mondello Beach with its turquoise water. Point yourself the other direction and you can wind up Monte Pellegrino for a view over the whole gulf, or roll out to Monreale for mosaics that leave visitors speechless. A bike gets you to all of it on your own schedule, without waiting for a bus that may or may not show up.
Palermo's old town is not built for cars — its baroque core is narrow, largely pedestrian and often gridlocked, so a bicycle is genuinely the fastest way through it. You can weave between the markets, dodge the traffic that frustrates drivers, and still cover the longer stretches to the coast or along the Foro Italico promenade that would wear out anyone on foot. For the more ambitious climbs up to Monte Pellegrino or out to Monreale, a good set of gears turns a tough ride into a rewarding one.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike, and there is no registration or insurance to arrange. Rental shops set their own minimum age and will usually ask for photo ID, so there is no need for an International Driving Permit either. A refundable deposit is common, generally taken as a credit card hold and scaled to the value of the bike, so bring a card and a form of ID when you come to pick it up.
A standard bike typically runs 3-8 EUR per day in low season and 10-20 EUR per day in high season, while a premium model such as an e-bike can run 20-35 EUR per day.
July and August are Palermo's high season, when demand and prices both peak and the midday heat makes riding uncomfortable anyway. November through February is low season, with quieter streets and the lowest rates, though some smaller outlets may run reduced hours. If you can, aim for spring or early autumn — the weather is kind and you will beat both the heat and the crowds. In high season it is worth booking your bike rental in Palermo a few days ahead to make sure your model of choice is available.
Italy drives on the right, and while cycle helmets are not legally required for adults, wearing one is always a sensible idea in city traffic. General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, rising outside town, and the blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l. As a cyclist, make sure your bike has working lights and reflectors for riding after dusk, and wear a reflective vest if you head outside the city at night or through a tunnel. If you want to rent a bicycle in Palermo, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!

When you make a reservation of a bicycle you also can order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, GPS navigation, clip pedals, side cases, rear rack, basket, light, gloves, speedometer, individual guide or tour, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to the address of your choice.
