Naples rewards anyone willing to slow down and look. Ride the Lungomare di Napoli at your own pace with Vesuvius rising across the bay, coast past Castel dell'Ovo on its little islet, and drift into Mergellina for a coffee with the fishing boats. A bike gets you to all of it without waiting on a bus schedule or hunting for parking.
The old town is dense, hilly and often clogged with scooters and cars, so a bike isn't the tool for crossing the whole city—it's the tool for the seafront. Naples suits cycling best if you base yourself near the bay: the Lungomare and Mergellina stretch is flat, scenic and made for pedalling, while short hops to nearby landmarks beat walking or squeezing onto a packed bus. Save the climbs up to Posillipo or Vomero for when you're feeling energetic, or let an e-bike do the work.
Standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes up to 25 km/h need no licence at all—just photo ID. Rental shops set their own minimum age, so bring a passport or ID card when you book. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card, with the amount scaled to the bike's value; faster throttle-driven e-bikes are treated as mopeds and may require a licence, so check with the operator if you're eyeing one of those. No International Driving Permit is needed for an ordinary bicycle.
Expect around 3–8 EUR per day in low season and 10–20 EUR per day in high season for a standard bike; e-bikes and premium hybrid or road models run 20–35 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, when prices sit at their highest and popular routes get busy. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter streets and the cheapest rates of the year. May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot—warm, dry and far less crowded than midsummer, with easier availability. If you want a specific model in high season, book a few days ahead rather than showing up and hoping.
Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's a sensible habit on busy streets. General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and lower on some city roads, so bikes generally keep pace with local traffic on the flat seafront stretches. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for drivers, and it's worth staying well under that if you're mixing a ride with any sightseeing stops that involve a glass of wine. Bikes need working lights and reflectors from dusk onward, plus a reflective vest or jacket if you're riding outside built-up areas at night or through tunnels.
