Lecce rewards anyone willing to explore it slowly, and a bicycle is the best way to do that. Ride into Piazza del Duomo as the golden stone catches the morning light, then pedal a few minutes to Basilica di Santa Croce, where the carved Baroque facade looks almost alive with cherubs and gargoyles. From there it's an easy roll to the excavated Roman amphitheatre in Piazza Sant'Oronzo, one of the few places in Italy where ancient ruins sit right in the middle of daily café life.
Lecce's historic centre is compact, mostly flat and largely closed to cars, so a bike gets you between sights faster than walking without the hassle of parking a scooter or a car. The same flat terrain stretches out across the Salento countryside, which means you're not limited to the old town — the coast at San Cataldo and even Otranto are realistic rides once you're in the saddle, something a pedestrian simply can't manage in a day.
Nothing complicated. Standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes (up to 25 km/h, 250 W) require no licence, registration or insurance in Italy — rental shops just ask for photo ID and set their own minimum age. A deposit is usually taken as a credit card hold, and if you're arriving from outside the EU it's worth carrying an International Driving Permit alongside your ID, in case the shop asks for one as standard practice.
Prices swing a lot with the season. A basic city bike runs roughly 3-8 EUR per day in winter, while summer rates for a standard bike land around 10-20 EUR per day; e-bikes or road bikes typically go for 15-25 EUR per day depending on when you book.
High season runs June through August, with July and August the busiest and most expensive months across Salento. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and some seasonal outlets scale back their hours. If you want good availability without midsummer crowds or heat, May, June, September and early October hit the sweet spot — warm, dry and easier on both your legs and your wallet.
Italy drives on the right. Cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet as adults, but lights and reflectors are mandatory from dusk onward, and a reflective vest is required outside built-up areas at night or in tunnels. General speed limits are 50 km/h in town and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside it — figures worth knowing if you're sharing the road with scooters and cars on the way to the coast. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone under 21.
