Acireale rewards anyone willing to pedal a little. Roll out from the Baroque hush of Piazza Duomo, drop through the gardens of Villa Belvedere with Etna smoking on the horizon, then let the road bend downhill toward Santa Maria La Scala, where fishing boats sit pulled up on the stones below the Timpa cliffs. On two wheels the whole coast opens up in an afternoon — something a car mostly can't manage here, and a bus won't even try.
The old town itself is compact and flat enough that a bike gets you from square to square faster than you'd think, but the real reason to rent a bicycle in Acireale is the terrain just outside it. The Timpa reserve, the switchback descent to Santa Maria La Scala, and the rocky Riviera dei Ciclopi toward Aci Trezza are close as the crow flies but awkward by car — narrow lanes, nowhere to park — and exhausting on foot once you factor in the climbs. A bike turns that stretch of coastline into a loop you can do before lunch.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike capped at 25 km/h and 250 W — both are treated as ordinary bicycles under Italian law, with no registration or insurance needed. Faster, throttle-driven e-bikes count as mopeds instead, so check which type you're booking. Rental shops set their own minimum age, and you should bring photo ID; a refundable deposit is standard, usually held on a credit card. An International Driving Permit is not needed for a bicycle rental.
A basic city bike runs about EUR 3–5 per day in low season and EUR 10–15 per day in high season. E-bikes and higher-spec touring or road bikes cost more, typically EUR 20–40 per day.
June through August is high season on this coast, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks — book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, cheaper but with some seasonal outlets closed or running reduced hours. May, June, September and early October hit the sweet spot: warm, quiet, and easy on the wallet compared with midsummer.
Italy drives on the right. Cycle helmets aren't legally required for adults, though they're sensible on the Timpa's cliff roads. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h speed limit for motor traffic, so as a cyclist you'll generally have calmer, slower streets to share. If you're riding after dark or through a tunnel outside town, Italian law requires a reflective vest or jacket, plus working lights and reflectors on the bike. The historic centre falls under a camera-enforced ZTL zone for motor vehicles — it doesn't affect cyclists, but it's worth knowing if you're also driving in. Alcohol limits for motor vehicles sit at 0.5 g/l, zero for newer drivers, though none of this touches you on a bicycle — just ride sober and predictable on the coastal descents.
