Ko Chang doesn't have a single traffic light, and it doesn't need one. Rent a bicycle here and your day opens up: pedal down from the busy strip at Hat Sai Khao to the quieter sand at Hat Kai Bae, or push further to Lonely Beach where the bars spill onto the road at sunset. Every stretch of coast feels like its own small discovery, and a bike lets you stop whenever something catches your eye — a viewpoint, a seafood shack, a trail into the trees.

There's no public transport on Ko Chang, and songthaew taxis are slow and not cheap for hopping between beaches all day. The island's one ring road loops roughly 70km around the coast, linking beaches, waterfalls and fishing villages, with hilly, winding sections that reward anyone on two wheels rather than stuck waiting for a lift. That's exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a bicycle in Ko Chang instead of relying on taxis for every short trip.

Top 10 things to see in Ko Chang by bicycle

  1. Hat Sai Khao (White Sand Beach) — the main beach strip with restaurants and nightlife, an easy first ride from most rentals.
  2. Hat Kai Bae — a quieter beach further south, a good midpoint stop on a loop of the west coast.
  3. Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam) — a backpacker beach with bars, a favourite stop on the coastal road.
  4. Bang Bao Fishing Village — a pier village of stilted shops and seafood restaurants at the island's southern tip.
  5. Klong Plu Waterfall — a short walk from parking to a swimmable waterfall, close to Kai Bae.
  6. Than Mayom Waterfall — multi-tiered falls on the east coast with a royal pavilion, far less crowded than Klong Plu.
  7. Ko Chang Viewpoint — a coastal overlook on the west-coast road with a classic sea view, perfect for photos.
  8. Salak Kok Fishing Village — a mangrove village on the east coast with a kayak route through the mangroves.
  9. Wat Salak Phet — a temple in a quiet east-coast fishing village, a good turnaround point for an east-side ride.
  10. Ko Chang East Coast Road — the round-island ride itself, quieter and hillier than the west coast strip.

What do you need to rent a bicycle in Ko Chang?

Good news — no licence, no IDP, and no minimum age. Thai law doesn't require a licence for a bicycle, and there's no helmet law for adult cyclists either, though we'd still recommend wearing one on the hillier east-coast stretches. Most shops ask for a small deposit; where you can, offer cash rather than handing over your passport.

How much does it cost to rent a bicycle in Ko Chang?

Bicycle rental is one of the cheapest ways to get around the island, and prices barely move with the seasons compared with scooters.

  • Low season (May–October): prices sit at the low end, similar to the roughly 120–150 THB/day charged for basic scooters at this time.
  • High season (December–February): demand rises and rates edge up, though bicycles stay noticeably cheaper than scooters, which run 200–300 THB/day in peak weeks.
  • December–January is the busiest and priciest stretch on the island overall, so booking a couple of days ahead helps.

When to book a rental bicycle in Ko Chang?

November to February is Ko Chang's high season — dry, breezy, and the best riding weather of the year, but also the busiest, so shops can run low on bikes around Christmas and New Year. May to October is low season, with rain showers rolling in but far fewer crowds and the best prices. If you're set on riding in December or January, book your bicycle a few days in advance rather than turning up and hoping.

Local traffic rules in Ko Chang

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and pass on the right. Cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, but it's a smart habit on the steeper, twisting sections of the east coast road. Speed limits don't really apply to bicycles, but share the road sensibly with scooters and songthaews, especially on blind bends where sand and gravel can build up. If you plan on a drink at Lonely Beach, remember Thailand's road rules apply to all vehicles, so save the beer for after you've parked the bike for the day.
