Vis is not an island you rush. It is one you circle slowly, engine humming, with the sea flashing between pine trees on one side and limestone hills on the other. You will always can rent a scooter on Vis from our website and set your own pace — down to the pebbles of Stiniva Bay, up the switchbacks to Mount Hum, or along the coast road into the fishing streets of Komiža. Ride slow, stop often, and the island opens up in a way a bus timetable never lets it.

Vis is basically one long, winding road tying Vis Town to Komiža, with narrow branches dropping to beaches and villages along the way. Buses run rarely and taxis are expensive for island distances, so most visitors either drive or ride. A scooter fits the tight bends and thin parking spots far better than a car, and it gets you to spots like Stiniva or Rukavac that public transport simply skips.

Top 10 things to see in Vis by scooter

  1. Stiniva Bay (Uvala Stiniva) — an award-winning pebble cove pinched between cliffs; park at the top and walk down to one of Croatia's most photographed beaches.
  2. Milna Beach — a quiet sandy-pebble bay on the north coast with shallow water and a couple of konoba restaurants for lunch.
  3. Komiža Old Town — a west-coast fishing town with a Venetian waterfront, the Kaštel fortress, and boats leaving for the Blue Cave on Biševo.
  4. Vis Town — the harbor town where Roman ruins meet an English cemetery and a seafront promenade, a natural loop start and end.
  5. Mount Hum viewpoint — the island's highest point at 587m; the climb rewards you with views over both Vis Town and Komiža bays.
  6. Fort George (Wellington Fort) — a Napoleonic-era fortress atop Mount Hum, now a wine bar with sunset views over the whole island.
  7. Tito's Cave (Titova pećina) — a WWII partisan hideout cut into the hillside near Podšpilje, a short ride and a short walk away.
  8. Rukavac — a small pebble-beach village on the south coast, clear water and a relaxed alternative to Stiniva.
  9. Green Cave (Zelena špilja), Ravnik islet — a sea cave near Rukavac, often paired with a swim stop there.
  10. Stončica Lighthouse and beach — a working lighthouse on the island's eastern tip with a small cove below, lovely at sunrise or in a quiet afternoon.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Vis?

Croatia treats scooters differently from Italy or Spain: a plain car licence is not enough. For anything over 50cc you need at least category A1, while 50cc mopeds need category AM. Riders are usually expected to be 18 or older, and a deposit is standard, held on a card or taken in cash and released when the scooter comes back undamaged. If your licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Vis?

A standard 50cc scooter runs from around 5 EUR to 15 EUR a day in low season, with listings on our website starting near the bottom of that range. In high season, expect roughly 25 EUR to 35 EUR a day, since demand jumps and the island's fleet is limited. Larger or newer models typically add 5 EUR to 10 EUR on top of the standard rate.

  • Cheapest months: April, May and October.
  • Priciest months: July and August, when stock also runs short.

When to book a rental scooter in Vis?

June through August is Croatia's high season, and July and August are the peak of the peak — book well ahead, since a small island has a small fleet. Low season runs November to March, though many island rental shops close for winter entirely. For the best mix of good weather, open shops and fair prices, aim for May, June, September or early October.

Local traffic rules in Vis

Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, no exceptions, and scooters must run with headlights on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town and 90 km/h on open roads, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most riders, but zero tolerance applies if you're under 25. Police checks on the coastal roads are common in summer, so keep it steady and sober.
