Picture swapping the car queue for the causeway breeze: with a scooter under you, the ride from Château d'Oléron's old ramparts to the pine-shaded lanes near Boyardville takes minutes, not a full afternoon of parking hunts. Salt air, flat straight roads and a coastline that keeps unfolding beach after beach — this is why so many travellers choose to rent a scooter on Île d'Oléron instead of relying on buses or their own two feet.
The island is barely 30km long and almost entirely flat, with quiet coastal roads and dedicated cycle paths linking every village and beach. Outside the busy August weeks, traffic is light, so a scooter lets you hop between the Cotinière fishing port, the salt marshes and the northern lighthouse in a single day — and parking near a beach or old-town square is far easier on two wheels than four.
For a 50cc scooter you need an AM licence, available from age 14 after a short training course — anyone with a full car licence, or born before 1 January 1988, already qualifies. For 125cc models you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence, or a car licence held at least two years plus a 7-hour training course. Rental agencies on the island usually set their own minimum age, often 18. Expect to leave a card deposit, refunded on return, and non-EU visitors should bring an international driving permit alongside their national licence.
Prices move a lot with the season, from budget runabouts to bigger premium models.
July and August are the island's high season, when beaches, roads and rental fleets are all at their busiest — book a few weeks ahead if you want a specific model. From November to March, in the low season, prices drop and the island feels wonderfully quiet, though some outlets reduce their hours. May, June and September strike the best balance: warm weather, open rentals and noticeably calmer roads than midsummer.
France drives on the right, and a few rules matter for a smooth ride. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, and must be ECE-approved with reflective stickers. Gloves are legally required too, and dipped headlights should stay on at all times. In built-up villages the limit is 50 km/h, dropping further on some rural stretches, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l — effectively 0.2 g/l if you're within your first three years of holding a licence.
