Dugi Otok rewards anyone willing to get off the ferry and go looking. This slim, 45-kilometre-long island off Zadar hides sandy coves, pine forests and cliffs that most day-trippers never see, and the best way to reach them is on two wheels. Ride the coast road toward Sakarun Beach for a swim in shallow turquoise water, then cut south to Telašćica Nature Park, where the land ends in cliffs dropping straight into the Adriatic. A scooter turns what would be a long, hot slog on foot into an easy, breezy afternoon.

The island has essentially one spine road connecting its villages, with almost no traffic and nothing resembling a big town to navigate. That makes it a poor fit for a bulky rental car and a punishing one for a bicycle once the summer heat sets in over the long distances between villages. A scooter is the sweet spot: light enough to dart down narrow lanes, fast enough to cover the whole island in a day, and easy to park anywhere you fancy a swim. Renting a scooter in Dugi Otok is, put simply, the way locals themselves get around.

Top 10 things to see in Dugi Otok by scooter

  1. Telašćica Nature Park — cliffs, coves, and the salt lake Mir on the island's southeast tip, the destination most riders build their day around.
  2. Sakarun Beach — a sandy, shallow, turquoise bay near Božava, and easily the island's most photographed spot.
  3. Veli Rat Lighthouse — the tallest lighthouse on the Adriatic, reached through pine forest at the island's northwest tip.
  4. Verige Strait viewpoint — sheer sea cliffs plunging into the Kornati channel, a short ride and walk inside Telašćica.
  5. Sali — the island's main village and port, with a lively harbour and konobas serving fresh fish.
  6. Božava — a resort village with a pine-shaded waterfront promenade and small marina, a natural loop endpoint.
  7. Zaglav — a quiet fishing hamlet along the scenic stretch between Sali and Savar.
  8. Soline — a small bay near Savar with a shallow sandy cove, worth the short detour off the main road.
  9. Brbinj — the ferry port on the island's northern side, and a handy waypoint if you're riding the length of Dugi Otok.
  10. Mir Lake — a saltwater lake inside Telašćica said to have therapeutic mud, a short walk from the park road.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Dugi Otok?

In Croatia, a car licence alone isn't enough for anything above 50cc — you'll need at least category A1, or a moped licence (category AM) if you're sticking to a 50cc scooter. Most rental agencies set 18 as the practical minimum age. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, refunded when you return the scooter undamaged. If your licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with the physical card.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Dugi Otok?

Prices swing a lot with the season. A standard 50cc scooter runs roughly 20-30 EUR per day in July and August, while larger or newer models go for around 35-45 EUR per day. Outside peak summer, rates drop sharply, with some off-peak or multi-day deals starting from as little as 5 EUR per day.

  • Peak summer (July-August): highest demand and prices, book ahead.
  • Shoulder months (May, June, September, October): noticeably cheaper, with pleasant riding weather.
  • Deep off-season: many island rental shops close, but the few that stay open charge the least.

When to book a rental scooter in Dugi Otok?

High season runs June to August, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks on the whole Adriatic coast — book your scooter rental in Dugi Otok well in advance if you're travelling then, as stock on a small island runs out fast. Low season stretches from November to March, when many shops shut for winter entirely. The sweet spot is May, June, September or early October: warm, dry days without the crowds or the steepest prices.

Local traffic rules in Dugi Otok

Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though a 50cc moped is capped at its own top speed of 45 km/h regardless. Scooters and motorcycles must run with headlights on at all times, day and night. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, but it drops to zero for drivers under 25 — on-the-spot checks are common around coastal towns in summer, so it's not worth the risk.
