Cres is the kind of island that rewards anyone willing to cover a bit of distance. One ride south from the harbour cafés of Cres Town and you're winding toward Osor, a village so small you can walk its old stone bridge in a minute, then on to the sculpture park that flanks the canal. Head north instead and the road climbs to Beli, a hilltop settlement where griffon vultures nest on the cliffs below — the kind of detour that only makes sense on two wheels. With a scooter under you, the whole island opens up: quiet coves, switchback roads, and villages most visitors never reach.

Cres is long and narrow, strung along a single spine road with villages scattered many kilometres apart, so covering ground matters more here than in most towns. A scooter closes that distance without the hassle of parking a car in the tight lanes of the old towns, and outside July and August traffic on the main road is genuinely light. It's also the only practical way to reach cliff-top places like Lubenice without booking an organised tour.

Top 10 things to see in Cres by scooter

  1. Cres Town (Grad Cres) — the old harbour and Venetian loggia make a natural start and end point for any loop around the island.
  2. Osor — a tiny historic town on the canal linking Cres and Lošinj, known for its stone bridge and open-air sculpture park.
  3. Beli — a hilltop village and home to the Caput Insulae griffon vulture rescue centre, a classic ride for anyone on a scooter.
  4. Lubenice — a cliff-top medieval village with sweeping Adriatic views, reached along a scenic switchback road.
  5. Vrana Lake — the island's freshwater lake and main water source, worth a short detour off the main route.
  6. Valun — a quiet fishing village with a pebble beach and the historic Valun tablet.
  7. Predošćica beach — a popular bay near Cres Town, ideal for a swim stop mid-ride.
  8. Martinšćica — a seaside village with sheltered bays, a relaxed stretch of coastal riding.
  9. Zdovice viewpoint — a lookout over the sea and cliffs on the road up to Lubenice.
  10. Punta Križa — the island's quieter southern tip, good for a coastal ride away from the crowds.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Cres?

In Croatia, a plain car licence isn't enough for anything above 50cc — you'll need at least category A1, or a dedicated moped licence (category AM) for smaller machines. The practical minimum age at most agencies is 18, though this can vary by operator. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card and released when the scooter comes back undamaged. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Cres?

Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find scooters from around 5–10 EUR per day, while high season runs 15–25 EUR per day, and premium models can reach 25–35 EUR per day.

  • Cheapest in April, May and October.
  • Most expensive in July and August, when demand peaks island-wide.

When to book a rental scooter in Cres?

High season runs June through August, with July and August the busiest and priciest — book ahead if you're travelling then, since island stock is limited. Low season stretches from November to March, when many shops close for winter and the ones that stay open charge noticeably less. For the best balance of good weather and lighter crowds, aim for May, June or September into early October.

Local traffic rules in Cres

Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, no exceptions, and scooters must ride with headlights on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though mopeds are capped at their construction speed of 45 km/h. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most riders, but zero tolerance applies if you're under 25. Expect occasional checks on the coastal road and around Cres Town in summer.
