Korčula is one of those Adriatic islands where the map lies to you — it looks small, but the coast road twists past so many coves, vineyards and stone villages that a single day never feels like enough. Wander the walls of Korčula Old Town, said to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, then head out along the coast toward Lumbarda or Pupnat, where the sea turns a shade of blue you won't find in any brochure. Renting a scooter here isn't just convenient — it's the way locals actually get around.
The old town itself is compact and best explored on foot, but everything worth seeing beyond its walls is strung along narrow, winding roads that a car handles clumsily and a scooter handles perfectly. Parking outside the gates takes seconds, fuel costs next to nothing, and you can pull over at a viewpoint or a hidden cove whenever you feel like it — something no bus tour will ever let you do. If you want to rent a scooter in Korčula, this is exactly the kind of island that rewards it.
For anything above 50cc you'll need at least a category A1 licence — unlike Italy or Spain, a plain car licence isn't enough here. Riders are usually expected to be at least 18, and rental shops will ask for a deposit, either as a card hold or in cash, refunded when you bring the scooter back undamaged. If your licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it.
Expect roughly 5-10 EUR per day in low season, rising to about 15-25 EUR per day in high season, with larger-cc scooters or e-bikes running 25-35 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, with July and August the busiest and priciest months — book ahead if you're travelling then, as stock on a small island runs out fast. Low season stretches from November to March, though many island rental shops close for winter entirely. If you want warm, dry riding without the crowds or the premium price tag, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, no exceptions, and scooters must run with headlights on day and night year-round. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though mopeds are capped at their own construction speed. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to zero for drivers under 25 — checks are common around tourist towns in summer.
