Picture starting your morning at the foot of the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, twisting up the hill without breaking a sweat, then coasting back down into the tangled lanes of Vieux Lyon before the tour groups arrive. That's the appeal of getting around on two wheels here — Lyon rewards anyone willing to climb its hills and duck into its side streets, and a scooter lets you do both without a second thought.
Lyon's center is compact but far from flat, wedged between two rivers and topped by steep hills on both sides. Walking wears you out fast, buses get stuck in the same traffic as everyone else, and parking a car near Vieux Lyon or Croix-Rousse is its own headache. A scooter clears the climbs, slips through the traboules-lined lanes, and gets you from the Presqu'île to either riverbank in minutes — which is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a scooter in Lyon rather than rely on foot and transit alone.
For a 50cc moped, an AM licence is enough — available from age 14, or automatically covered if you already hold a full car or motorcycle licence. Step up to a 125cc scooter and you'll need either an A1 motorcycle licence or a category B car licence held for at least two years, plus a short training course. Rental companies in Lyon usually set their own minimum age, often 18, regardless of what the law technically allows. Expect to leave a deposit, normally pre-authorised on a credit card and released when you return the scooter undamaged, and if you're visiting from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence to be safe.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In winter you can find rates from around 5 to 10 EUR per day, while summer — June through September — pushes that up to roughly 15 to 25 EUR per day. Want something with more power under you? Larger-engine or premium models run about 25 to 40 EUR per day year-round.
If your dates are flexible, aim for spring or early autumn: the weather is already pleasant, prices haven't hit their summer peak, and availability is much better. High season runs June through September, with July and August the busiest and priciest stretch nationwide, so book a few weeks ahead if you're coming then. Low season, November to March, is quieter and cheaper, though some smaller outlets scale back their hours.
France drives on the right. A helmet is compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or moped, and it needs to be ECE-approved with reflective stickers on the front, back and sides — France also requires CE-approved gloves, which is unusual and does get enforced. Keep your headlight on at all times, day or night. Speed limits in town are 50 km/h unless posted otherwise, and Lyon runs a low-emission zone (ZFE), so check your scooter carries the right Crit'Air sticker. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to a near-zero 0.2 g/l if you're within your first three years of holding a licence.
