Petrolheads know Le Mans by reputation long before they arrive, but riding a quad through it is what turns the name into a place. Beyond the roar of the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans, the Sarthe unfolds into oak forest, riverside towns and stone châteaux that no bus tour will show you. A quad lets you chase the racing legend in the morning and lose yourself in the countryside by afternoon, stopping wherever the road looks good.

The old town's cobbled lanes are best left to your feet, but everything around them was built for a quad. Distances between the circuit, the forest and the outlying villages are too long to walk and too dull by car — on a quad you feel the corners, the gravel tracks and the open farmland the same way locals do, without needing a motorcycle licence to do it.

Top 10 things to see in Le Mans by quad-bike

  1. Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans (Circuit de la Sarthe / Bugatti Circuit) — the legendary endurance-race circuit, the single most famous motoring landmark in town and a must for any powered-vehicle visit.
  2. Musée des 24 Heures du Mans — a motorsport museum right by the circuit, packed with over a century of race cars, and a natural stop before or after visiting the track area.
  3. Cité Plantagenêt (Vieux Mans) — one of France's best-preserved medieval quarters; park up and explore its cobbled lanes and half-timbered houses on foot.
  4. Cathédrale Saint-Julien du Mans — a landmark Gothic-Romanesque cathedral towering over the old town, visible from across the Sarthe valley.
  5. Abbaye de l'Épau — a 13th-century Cistercian abbey just outside the city, a quiet historic detour a short ride from the centre.
  6. Forêt de Bercé — one of France's most beautiful oak forests, about 30km southeast of the city, with tracks and springs like the Fontaine de la Coudre for a scenic countryside ride.
  7. Berges de la Sarthe — the riverside promenade below the old town, an easy and scenic stretch to ride alongside.
  8. Château du Lude — a grand Loire-style château in the Sarthe valley, a popular day-trip destination from Le Mans.
  9. Zoo de la Flèche — a well-known regional zoo south of the city, a favourite ride destination for families.
  10. Circuit Bugatti karting complex — part of the same racing grounds as the 24h circuit, adding another motorsport stop to a loop through the site.

What do you need to rent a quad-bike in Le Mans?

On French public roads a quad always requires a licence. Light quadricycles up to 50cc fall under the AM category, while heavier quads need a B1 or full category B car licence, depending on the machine — since a standard car licence usually covers it, most visitors are already qualified. Rental companies typically ask for a minimum age of 18 and take a deposit by credit card pre-authorisation, refunded on undamaged return; confirm the exact sum with your chosen operator. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, just to be safe.

How much does it cost to rent a quad-bike in Le Mans?

Expect to pay around EUR 15-25 per day in low season, rising to EUR 35-55 per day in high season, with premium models running EUR 60-90 per day.

  • Prices dip lowest from November to March.
  • They climb in June, driven up by the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in mid-June.
  • July and August, France's summer holiday months, stay expensive too.

When to book a rental quad-bike in Le Mans?

If you can plan around the calendar, June and the summer months bring the best weather but also the highest demand — race week in mid-June sells out machines fast, so book well ahead if you're coming for the 24 Hours. For quieter roads and lower prices, aim for the shoulder months outside the November-to-March low season, when the forest tracks and river routes are just as good without the crowds.

Local traffic rules in Le Mans

France drives on the right, and a few rules matter for quad riders. Helmets are compulsory on motorised vehicles, and gloves are legally required too — France enforces this more strictly than most countries. Speed limits run up to 80 km/h on two-way rural roads outside town (check local signs, as some départements have restored 90 km/h) and drop to 50 km/h once you pass a town's name sign. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to effectively zero for anyone still in their first three years of holding a licence. Ride within these limits and the Sarthe countryside is yours to explore at an easy pace. Have a nice trip!

If you wish to rent a quad bike without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
