Picture a ribbon of white sand cutting through the sea on one side and rugged hills on the other — that's Dam Mon. Public buses don't reach this far, and a scooter will bog down the moment the road turns to loose sand, so most travellers who make it out here do it on a quad bike rental in Dam Mon. You can ride straight across the Hòn Gốm dune belt, drop down to the quiet cove at Bãi Xuân Đừng, and finish at the trailhead below Mũi Đôi, Vietnam's easternmost point, where hikers climb the last stretch over granite boulders to watch the country's first sunrise.
Dam Mon simply wasn't built for cars or city scooters. The peninsula's best spots — the dunes, the hidden coves, the cape itself — sit along unpaved tracks and soft sand spread across 15 to 20 km, with no public transport linking them at all. A quad handles ruts and sand without effort, covers that whole stretch in a single loop, and turns the ride into the highlight of the day rather than just a way to get between beaches.
Quads aren't treated as ordinary road vehicles here — they're ridden on dunes, tracks and private land under a tour operator's supervision rather than checked against a licence, so there's no formal driving-licence requirement in the way there is for a motorcycle. Rental shops still set their own minimum age, usually 18, and will ask for a deposit, either in cash or by holding your passport as security. If you're also planning to ride a scooter or motorcycle elsewhere in Vietnam, bring a 1968-convention IDP, since the 1949 Geneva version issued in the US and a few other countries isn't valid here.
Expect around 370,000–420,000 VND per day in low season, rising to about 500,000–650,000 VND per day in high season. Larger or newer buggy-style quads with four seats run higher, roughly 700,000–900,000 VND per day.
High season runs November to April for international visitors, with a second, domestic-driven peak in June to August; Tết brings the sharpest spike of all, when bikes get scarce and prices jump. If you want the calmer, cheaper window, aim for September to November or March, when the dunes are just as photogenic and quads are easier to book on short notice. During the busiest weeks it's worth reserving a few days ahead rather than turning up and hoping.
Vietnam drives on the right. Quads are generally kept off public roads and ridden on dunes and tracks under operator supervision, but if your trip also involves a scooter or motorcycle, helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and enforcement is routine. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding or driving — even one drink is an offence, and checkpoints are common at night. Speed limits are lower in built-up areas than on open roads, and lower again for two-wheelers than for cars, so read the signposted limit rather than assume a default.
