If someday you will be in Cat Ba, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can also rent a quad bike in Cat Ba on our website and take on the island's forested hills and quiet back roads from behind a set of big knobby tyres. Cat Ba is the largest island in Lan Ha Bay, mostly covered by dense national park forest and limestone karst, and a quad bike is a fun way to reach the tracks and viewpoints that regular traffic cannot.
Keep in mind that much of Cat Ba's interior is protected national park with limited motorised access, so quads here are ridden mainly on organised tours over designated forest tracks, farm roads and beach approaches rather than freely on public streets. That still leaves plenty to enjoy: dirt tracks skirting the park, quiet lanes to remote villages, and beach roads along the island's south coast.
Local operators keep the requirements straightforward: you should be at least 16–18 years old, and an ordinary licence (category B, car licence) is normally accepted for guided rides on designated tracks. A short safety briefing is standard before setting off, and many trips run with a guide leading the group, especially on narrower forest paths. A deposit is usually required in cash or by card, refunded once the quad is returned undamaged. If any part of a route uses public roads rather than staying on tracks, check with the rental company, as an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a motorcycle-class licence may then be expected. A helmet is always provided and should be worn for the whole ride.
Quad bike rental in Cat Ba starts from around 400,000 VND for a standard single-seat ATV on a shorter guided route, rising to roughly 700,000–1,000,000 VND for a longer tour into the national park, a two-seater, or a private instructor. Many operators price by the hour rather than the day, since most visitors book a set tour length: a typical one- to two-hour session runs from about 200,000 to 400,000 VND per hour, depending on the route and whether a guide is included. Prices move with the seasons:
Weekends and Vietnamese public holidays push demand up within any season, so booking a day or two ahead helps if you want a specific tour time or vehicle. Overall, budget more for a summer weekend and expect the best rates in the quieter shoulder months.
Cat Ba's warmest, most settled weather runs roughly from May to August, which is also the busiest and priciest season on the island. The cooler months from December to February can bring mist and occasional rain, which sometimes limits access to forest tracks, while March, April, September and October offer a good middle ground of milder weather and thinner crowds. If you want reliable dry conditions, aim for the summer months; if you prefer fewer people and lower prices, the shoulder seasons are a solid choice.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory whenever you are on a public road, and guides require one on the off-road tracks too for safety. Quads on Cat Ba generally stay on designated national park tracks, farm roads and tour routes rather than mixing with regular island traffic, so always follow your guide's line, particularly on narrow forest paths and near cliff edges. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h on the rare stretches where a route touches a public road. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Take muddy or rocky sections slowly and be considerate of hikers and villagers sharing the same tracks.
