Vicenza rewards a rider before you've even left the historic center. Point the bike south and the Colli Berici open up in gentle vineyard curves; head north and within the hour you're climbing toward the Piccole Dolomiti or tackling the switchbacks of Monte Grappa, one of Italy's classic biker pilgrimages. Between them sits a city built by Palladio, where a quick stop at Villa La Rotonda or a coffee in Piazza dei Signori feels like a natural pause between longer runs into the Veneto hills.
Vicenza's old town is largely pedestrian and hemmed in by ZTL restrictions, so a car does you little good and public transport won't get you up a mountain pass. A motorcycle solves both problems at once: it slips through town for the cultural stops, then turns the surrounding hills and plateaus into your actual destination. If you're weighing whether to rent a motorcycle in Vicenza, this is really a city built around the ride out, not just the ride in.
For a scooter up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything from 50cc to 125cc requires an A1. Larger motorcycles step up through A2 and full A depending on power. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Rental operators typically ask for a minimum age of 18 and take a deposit, usually as a credit card hold sized to the vehicle's value, along with a copy of your ID or passport.
A basic scooter or small-displacement bike starts around 25 EUR per day in low season, while larger touring motorcycles run higher regardless of the time of year.
High season runs June through August, with July and August combining the biggest crowds and the highest prices — book ahead if you're planning a summer trip into the Dolomites or up Monte Grappa. Low season, from November to March, brings the cheapest rates but also cooler mountain roads and shorter days. For the best mix of good weather and lighter traffic, May, June, September and early October are hard to beat.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on scooters and motorcycles, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, and 110–130 km/h on faster extra-urban roads and motorways — though 50cc mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. Dipped headlights stay on at all times. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or holding a licence less than three years. And watch for ZTL cameras in Vicenza's historic center — ride in without a permit and the fine will find you weeks later.
