Salerno doesn't get the crowds that clog Sorrento and Positano in August, but it opens onto the same coast — and that makes it the smarter place to start. Roll out along the seafront on a motorcycle and within twenty minutes you're on the SS163, the cliffside road that carries you past Vietri sul Mare's ceramic workshops, through the anchovy-scented lanes of Cetara, and on toward Amalfi's cathedral square. Stop where you like, linger over lunch, then push on to Maiori's long beach or climb the switchbacks to Ravello's gardens above the water. This is a coast built for two wheels, and Salerno is where you pick them up without the crowds.
The SS163 is narrow, bends constantly, and in summer fills with coaches and rental cars nudging past each other on blind corners — a motorcycle slips through where four wheels can't, and parking is rarely more than a search for a curb. Salerno also sits at a crossroads: head north and you're chasing hairpins toward Amalfi and Positano, head south and the roads open up toward Paestum's Greek temples and the quieter Cilento coast, a full change of scenery in under an hour. Few starting points give you both a famous cliffside road and an easy, traffic-free alternative on the same day.
The licence you need depends on the machine. Category A1 covers scooters and motorcycles up to 125cc; mid-power and unrestricted bikes call for A2 or full A. Some rental shops will accept a car (category B) licence for a 125cc scooter, but this varies by operator, so it's worth confirming when you book. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Most operators set a minimum age around 18 and take a deposit as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike, along with a copy of your ID or passport.
Expect to pay 25-35 EUR a day for a scooter or small-displacement bike in low season, rising to 45-70 EUR in high season. Larger motorcycles or premium models run 70-120+ EUR a day.
July and August bring the highest prices and the thickest traffic on the SS163, so book several weeks ahead if you're travelling then. May, June, September and early October offer warm, dry weather with far fewer crowds and easier availability — the best trade-off between comfort and cost. If you're chasing the lowest rates, November to March is cheapest, but check ahead that your chosen operator is open, since some coastal rental shops scale back over winter.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorcycle or scooter, no exceptions, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, and 110 km/h on extra-urban dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years. Watch for ZTL zones in historic centres — camera-enforced restricted areas that generate an automatic fine, plus an admin charge from the rental company, if you ride through without a permit.
