Phitsanulok doesn't announce itself the way Chiang Mai or Bangkok do — and that's exactly the point. Pick up a bike here and within an hour you're climbing out of the flat river town into the hills, with Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park and its cool sunrise ridgelines waiting, or the wide grassland plateau of Thung Salaeng Luang rolling out ahead of you on empty curving roads. This is a city built around a single unmissable temple, Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, but its real reward sits an hour or two beyond the edge of town, and a motorcycle is how you get there.
Public transport in Phitsanulok simply doesn't reach the mountains, and the sights that make the region worth visiting are strung out over long distances on hilly, lightly-trafficked roads rather than packed into a walkable old town. In-town traffic is easygoing compared with Bangkok or Chiang Mai, so riding never feels stressful, while the terrain outside the city rewards a bike far more than a bicycle or a tuk-tuk ever could. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Phitsanulok, this is really the only practical way to see what the province is actually known for.
You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence backed by an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle entitlement. Some shops rent without checking, but roadside checkpoints do, and insurance is generally void without the right paperwork. Most rental companies set a minimum age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit; it's worth offering cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.
A standard 125–150cc automatic or semi-automatic runs around 900–1,000 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 1,100–1,400 THB during the cooler peak months. Bigger touring bikes, 300cc and up, typically cost 1,500–3,000+ THB per day depending on the model.
High season runs November to February, when cool, dry weather makes the mountain roads at their most enjoyable — book ahead if you're planning to travel then. Low season stretches from May through October, covering the rainy months, when prices drop and demand is lighter. Riding a scooter rental in Phitsanulok or a bigger bike is really about matching your dates to the weather more than chasing a discount.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 90 km/h on rural highways outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, tightened to 0.02% for drivers under 20, with roadside breath tests common around holidays. Carry your licence, IDP and rental documents at all times — checkpoints are routine, even in a quieter city like this one.
