Nakhon Phanom moves at the pace of the Mekong itself — slow, wide, and easy to follow. Rent a scooter here and your morning coffee on the Nakhon Phanom Mekong Riverside Promenade can turn into an afternoon at the golden stupa of Wat Phra That Phanom, with the mountains of Laos keeping pace across the water the whole way. This is a town built for two wheels, not a windscreen.
Traffic here is light, the roads are flat and smoothly paved, and the sights you'll want to see are spread out just enough that walking gets old fast and a songthaew never quite goes where or when you need it to. A scooter or a mid-size motorcycle lets you string together riverside temples, a countryside detour, and a 30-60km run out to That Phanom or Renu Nakhon in a single easy loop, stopping wherever the view asks you to.
You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some rental shops won't ask to see it, but police checkpoints do, and your insurance is generally void without one. Most shops set a minimum age of 18. Expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.
A standard scooter runs around 900-1000 THB per day in low season and 1200-1500 THB per day in high season, while larger-CC or newer bikes go for roughly 1800-2500 THB per day.
Book ahead if you're coming between November and February — it's the busiest and priciest stretch of the year, boosted further by the boat procession. From June to September you'll find the cheapest rates and can usually book closer to your travel date.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on the rural highways connecting the outlying districts. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to 0.02% if you're under 20, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers on you at all times.
