Bari doesn't reveal itself from a bus window. The old town's alleys are barely wide enough for two people to pass, the coast road south toward Polignano a Mare begs to be ridden slowly with the sea on one side, and the whitewashed hill town of Ostuni is close enough to reach before lunch. On a motorcycle you set the pace — stop when the clifftop view over Lama Monachile catches you off guard, linger in a piazza nobody put in the guidebook, then move on before the tour buses arrive.
This part of Puglia was practically built for two wheels. Bari's centro storico and the old quarters of Trani and Ostuni have lanes too narrow and parking too scarce for a car to be worth the hassle, while the Valle d'Itria's countryside roads between Alberobello, Locorotondo and Cisternino unspool in long, unhurried curves that reward a rider rather than a driver stuck behind a tour coach. Even the longer trips — out to Castel del Monte or across into Basilicata for Matera — feel like part of the adventure on a bike instead of a slog on the highway.
For a scooter up to 50cc you'll need at minimum a category AM licence; anything from 50cc up to 125cc calls for category A1, and larger motorcycles step up through A2 and full A depending on power. A full car licence (category B) sometimes covers a 125cc scooter within Italy, but not every rental company accepts a foreign B licence for this, so it's worth confirming before you book. Non-EU licence holders need an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Most operators set their own minimum age, usually 18, and take a deposit as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike.
A standard rental runs 25–35 EUR per day in low season and 40–60 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 60–100+ EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter period, when the coast gets busiest and rates climb. Low season stretches from November to March, when some seasonal outlets scale back or close. If you're after warm, dry riding without the crowds or the top prices, aim for May, June, September or early October, and book ahead if you're travelling in July or August since availability tightens fast.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a moped or motorcycle, no exceptions, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110 or 130 km/h on faster roads and motorways — though a 50cc moped is capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways entirely. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for riders under 21 or holding a licence less than three years. Watch for ZTL zones in historic centres like Bari's old town: ride into one without a permit and the fine finds you months later, plus an admin fee from the rental company.
