Surat Thani doesn't feel like a place built for traffic. Its riverside streets run flat and unhurried past Ban Don Pier, and a short pedal takes you from the market stalls at Talat Kaset to the shaded promenade along the Tapi River, where longtail boats drift past as the sun goes down. Push a little further and you're in Chaiya, cycling past the ancient stupa of Wat Phra Borommathat among quiet lanes that most visitors passing through on their way to the islands never see.
The town itself is what makes cycling here work so well. Surat Thani is compact, mostly flat and far less chaotic than Bangkok or Phuket, so a regular bicycle gets you comfortably around the riverside, the old town and nearby temples. For farther-flung sights like Khao Sok, most riders pair a bike ride with a songthaew or car for the longer stretch — the distances and midday heat make an all-day pedal out to the national park more effort than reward.
Renting a bicycle in Surat Thani is refreshingly simple: no licence and no minimum age are required by law, though most shops will ask you to be old enough to sign for the bike responsibly. A helmet isn't legally required for adult cyclists, but it's worth wearing one anyway. Some rental shops ask for a small deposit — cash or a copy of your ID is a safer option than handing over your passport. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle.
A basic city or beach-cruiser bicycle runs about 100-150 THB per day in low season and 150-250 THB in high season. Mountain bikes or electric bicycles, if you want a bit more range for the hillier routes, cost roughly 300-600 THB per day.
December to March is high season on this stretch of the Gulf coast — cooler, drier days and the best riding conditions, though prices rise accordingly. If you'd rather ride cheaply and don't mind the odd shower, aim for May-June or September-October, when low-season rates apply. Either way, booking a day or two ahead is normally enough outside of major Thai holidays.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and pass on the right, the same as scooters and cars share the road with you. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists but are strongly recommended, especially crossing busier junctions near the market and pier. Bicycles aren't bound by the posted vehicle speed limits, but stay alert around motorcycles, which often use the road shoulder and occasionally ride against traffic in town. Thailand's drink-driving limits apply to motorised vehicles, not bicycles, but riding sober is always the sensible choice, particularly after sudden monsoon downpours make painted road markings slippery.
