Olbia's harbour breeze and the pastel rooftops of the old town are best explored at handlebar height. Rent a bicycle and you can glide along the waterfront promenade near Isola Bianca, then climb toward Pittulongu Beach for your first proper look at Isola di Tavolara rising out of the sea. The historic centre is a five-minute pedal from the water, and the coast north toward the Costa Smeralda unrolls in front of you like it was built for two wheels.
Olbia rewards cyclists in a way few Sardinian towns do. The old town is flat and compact, so you can circle the historic core and harbourfront without hunting for parking or getting stuck behind tour buses. Head out of the centre, though, and the coastal roads north and south turn into real day trips — 10 to 40 km of gentle climbs, sea views, and quiet corners a car would blow straight past. Summer traffic and crowded beach car parks near Costa Smeralda make a bike the more relaxed option, too.
Standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes need no licence, registration or insurance in Italy — anyone can ride one. Rental shops set their own minimum age, and you should bring photo ID. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card, with the amount scaled to the bike's value; premium e-bikes and road bikes tend to carry a higher hold. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle rental.
Average rental price is around 3-8 EUR per day during low season for a standard city or hybrid bike, rising to roughly 12-25 EUR per day in high season. E-bikes and performance road bikes run higher, up to about 20-35 EUR per day at peak times.
High season runs June through September, with July and August the busiest and priciest months thanks to Costa Smeralda demand — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rates and the quietest roads, though availability can be thinner if smaller operators close for winter. For the best mix of good weather and manageable prices, aim for May, June or September.
Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's sensible on faster coastal roads. General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on roads outside town — useful to know when sharing tarmac with cars and scooters. If you're riding outside built-up areas at night or through a tunnel, a reflective vest and working lights are required. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, so keep that in mind if your ride includes a stop for local wine.
