Milan doesn't feel like a city built for walking — it feels like a city built for wheels. Slip past the marble spires of the Duomo di Milano at your own pace, coast through Parco Sempione toward the Arco della Pace, and end the day the way locals do, gliding along the Navigli canals just as the aperitivo crowd spills onto the terraces. A bicycle lets you string all of that together in a single afternoon, without waiting for a tram or fighting for a parking spot.
The historic centre is compact and almost entirely flat, which makes cycling the fastest way to cover the Duomo–Castello Sforzesco–Navigli triangle. Milan also enforces a ZTL restricted zone that keeps cars and many scooters out of the centre, but a bicycle glides through without a second thought. A growing network of cycle lanes, especially along the canals and through Parco Sempione, makes the ride comfortable even if you haven't been on a bike in years, and the flat terrain means you won't need an e-bike for most day trips.
No licence is required — standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes up to 25 km/h are treated as ordinary bicycles, with no registration or insurance involved. Rental shops set their own minimum age, and you'll usually just need a valid photo ID. A deposit is common, generally held on a credit card, and there's no need for an International Driving Permit.
Average rental price is EUR 3–10 per day during low season and EUR 12–20 during high season, with premium models such as e-bikes or hybrid road bikes running EUR 20–30 per day.
If you want to rent a bicycle in Milan, keep in mind that early booking pays off before the busy summer months.
High season runs from June through September, tied closely to trade fairs and Fashion Week, when both demand and prices peak. Low season stretches from November to February, with the coldest, quietest months — and the cheapest rates — falling in November, January and February. For the best balance of mild weather and lighter crowds, aim for spring or early autumn.
Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's a sensible habit in city traffic. General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, rising to 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside towns, but as a cyclist you'll mostly be sharing quieter streets and dedicated lanes. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for those under 21 — worth remembering if your ride includes a stop in the Navigli. After dark, make sure your bike has working lights and reflectors, and wear a reflective layer if you're heading outside the built-up centre.
