Picture freewheeling along the Adriatic with the limestone bulk of Dubrovnik City Walls on one side and the sea glittering on the other, no bus schedule to chase and no parking meter to feed. A bicycle lets you drift from Pile Gate down the coast road toward Lapad and Babin Kuk, stopping wherever the view demands it, then double back for a swim at Banje Beach before the Old Town even starts to fill up. This is what renting a bike in Dubrovnik gets you: the freedom to set your own pace along one of Croatia's most photographed coastlines.

The Old Town itself is pedestrian-only and stacked with steps, so no vehicle helps you there. But the road linking Pile Gate to the beaches and residential districts is mostly flat and easy pedalling, and it's exactly the stretch where cars struggle to park and buses run on their own clock. A bike closes that gap, and once you're warmed up it opens the door to longer coastal runs the average walker never attempts — up toward Trsteno, or south to Cavtat, both fine half-day rides if you pick a well-equipped e-bike.

Top 10 things to see in Dubrovnik by bike

  1. Dubrovnik City Walls — the ramparts that every rider in the city eventually circles back to, on foot for the walk itself, by bike to reach and leave.
  2. Lovrijenac Fortress — a short pedal west along the coast road to a clifftop fort with some of the best sea views in town.
  3. Banje Beach — the closest stretch of sand and pebble to the Old Town, an easy ride for a quick swim.
  4. Sveti Jakov Beach — further east along the coast, quieter and worth the extra distance if you want space to yourself.
  5. Mount Srđ via the Serpentine Road — a switchback climb rewarded with the classic panorama over the Old Town and the Adriatic.
  6. Lokrum Island — ride down to the Old Port and hop the short ferry across.
  7. Ploče Gate and Old Port (Stara Luka) — the eastern gate and harbour, a natural starting point for coastal routes.
  8. Pile Gate — the main western entrance and where most rides out along the coast begin.
  9. Trsteno Arboretum — a historic seaside garden about 15km up the coast, a rewarding longer ride out of the city.
  10. Cavtat — a postcard coastal town 15–20km south, a favourite full route for stronger riders or e-bikes.

What do you need to rent a bike in Dubrovnik?

None of this needs a licence — anyone can hop on a bicycle here. Rental shops generally ask riders to be at least 18, or younger if accompanied by an adult, and most will hold a deposit against the bike's value, either on a card or in cash, returned once you bring it back undamaged. Since no licence is required, an International Driving Permit doesn't come into it either.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Dubrovnik?

Expect to pay around 3-6 EUR per day in low season and 8-15 EUR per day in high season, with premium touring and e-bikes running 15-25 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking in July and August.
  • November through March is the cheapest and quietest window to book.
  • Booking a little ahead in summer helps, since the best bikes go first.

When to book a rental bike in Dubrovnik?

High season runs June to August, July and August being the busiest and priciest stretch on the whole coast — book early if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many shops scale back but prices drop sharply. If you can time your trip for May, June or September, you get warm, dry weather without the peak crowds or the highest rates.

Local traffic rules in Dubrovnik

Croatia drives on the right, and cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet — a sensible habit for riders of any age on these roads. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h limit, so bikes generally keep well within the flow of traffic on shared roads. If you're cycling at night or in poor visibility outside town, Croatian law requires working front and rear lights plus a reflective vest. And while it applies mainly to motorised traffic, it's worth knowing Croatia enforces a strict 0.05% blood-alcohol limit — zero tolerance for anyone under 25 — with checks common around tourist towns in summer.
