Dubrovnik's Old Town belongs to pedestrians, but the hills rising behind it belong to whoever's got the right wheels. Climb the switchback road to Srđ Hill and the whole walled city unfolds below you against the Adriatic; catch the ridge at Žarkovica around sunset and you'll understand why locals send visitors there instead of the crowded viewpoints in town. This is what a quad bike is for — not cruising the coast, but climbing into the hinterland few tourists ever see.
The coastal road is narrow and clogs fast in summer, and cars simply can't handle the steep, unpaved tracks above the city. A quad bike changes that. It turns the hill behind the Old Town and the backroads of Konavle into a short, punchy loop rather than a slog, which is exactly how rentals here are set up: half-day or full-day countryside runs rather than long highway trips.
Requirements depend on how the machine is registered: lighter quads are treated like mopeds, heavier road-registered ones are generally ridden on an ordinary car licence, and off-road-only quads used on organised countryside tours often need no licence at all — though a car licence is still commonly requested. Bring an International Driving Permit if your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA. Most operators set 18 as the practical minimum age and take a deposit, either a card hold or cash, refunded when the quad comes back undamaged.
Expect roughly EUR 15–25 per day in low season and EUR 35–55 per day in high season, with larger-engine or two-seat quads running EUR 60–90 per day.
High season runs June to August, July and August especially, when stock on the coast gets booked up early and prices sit at their highest — book a few weeks ahead if you're set on those dates. Low season stretches from November to March, when some operators close for winter altogether and the ones that stay open charge noticeably less. May, June, September and early October hit the sweet spot: warm, dry, and well short of peak crowds and prices.
Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, no exceptions, and headlights stay on day and night year-round on two- and four-wheeled powered vehicles. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most riders, but zero for anyone under 25 — and police checks along the coastal road are routine in summer, so it's not a rule worth testing.
