Buriram doesn't announce itself the way Bangkok or Chiang Mai do — it's the kind of province you have to go looking for, and a bicycle is exactly the right tool for that. Pedal out past the rice paddies at dawn and the road climbs quietly toward Phanom Rung Historical Park, a 10th-century Khmer temple perched on an extinct volcano, its long causeway lined up dead straight with the rising sun on certain mornings. Loop back down through the lowlands to Prasat Muang Tam, where lotus ponds ring a smaller sandstone sanctuary, and you'll have covered more genuine history in an afternoon than most visitors see in a week.
This is flat-to-gently-rolling countryside stitched together by quiet secondary roads, which is precisely what makes it good cycling territory. The main sights sit anywhere from 10 to 70 kilometres apart, close enough to link into a single loop but far enough that a car would rush you past the parts worth slowing down for. Outside the Chang International Circuit and the main highway, traffic is light, so even a casual rider can string together temples, reservoirs and old market streets without much stress. If you want to rent a bicycle in Buriram, this is the terrain it was made for.
Nothing complicated. Thailand doesn't require a licence to hire a bicycle, and there's no helmet law for adult cyclists either — though wearing one is still a good idea on the busier stretches near the highway. Most shops ask for a small deposit rather than your passport; if a shop does ask to hold your passport, it's worth offering cash or a photocopy instead. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle, and there's generally no strict minimum age, though shops may set their own.
A basic city or hybrid bike runs around 110–150 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 200–350 THB per day in high season. E-bikes and higher-end mountain bikes, useful if you're planning the longer loops out to Lam Nang Rong or Ban Kruat, cost more, around 400–700 THB per day.
November to February is high season, when the weather is coolest and most comfortable for a full day in the saddle — book ahead if you're travelling around the MotoGP race in October, when demand spikes locally. May to September is low season, with lower prices but hotter days and the chance of a sudden downpour, so plan your temple runs for the morning.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left-hand side of quiet roads and give way to overtaking traffic on your right. There's no legal helmet requirement for adult cyclists, but it's sensible to wear one regardless, particularly on the stretches near the highway or the Chang Circuit. Speed limits for motor vehicles run around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural highways, so stay alert on shared shoulders. None of this applies to alcohol limits for cyclists, but common sense does — the heat and long distances are enough of a challenge on their own.
