Cobblestones, porticoes and a skyline of medieval towers — Bologna rewards anyone willing to explore it slowly, and a bike is the easiest way to do that. Ride out from Piazza Maggiore in the morning and you can be climbing toward the Portico di San Luca by lunchtime, or pedalling the shaded canal path along the Navile out past the old city walls by afternoon. Rent a bicycle here and the whole city, plus the hills behind it, opens up in a way a bus timetable never will.
Bologna was practically built for two wheels. The historic centre is flat, compact and ringed by less than eight kilometres of old walls, so almost every sight sits within a fifteen- or twenty-minute ride. The famous porticoes that line the streets keep you dry and shaded whether it's raining in April or blazing in July, and Bologna's tangle of narrow one-way streets, made for pedestrians and cyclists long before cars, means a bike gets you places a driver would spend twenty minutes finding a way around. Head just south of the centre and the Colli Bolognesi hills add a whole second riding experience: real climbs, quiet countryside, and views back over the city's red rooftops.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike (up to 25 km/h, 250 W) — both are treated as ordinary bicycles in Italy, with no registration or insurance needed. Rental shops set their own minimum age, usually asking for photo ID at pickup, and most take a small deposit, either as a credit card hold or cash. Faster or throttle-driven e-bikes are classed as mopeds instead, so if you're after real speed, check with the operator which category your bike falls under.
Expect to pay around EUR 3-8 per day in low season, and EUR 10-18 per day in high season; e-bikes and higher-end road or hybrid models run EUR 15-25 per day.
High season runs June through August, plus graduation weekends scattered through spring and autumn — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then, since good bikes get snapped up. Low season, November to February, is the cheapest and easiest time to find a bike with no advance planning at all, though short winter days and cooler weather make the hill routes less appealing. If you can, aim for spring or early autumn: pleasant riding weather without the summer's peak prices.
Italy drives on the right, and while cycle helmets aren't legally required for adults, wearing one is always a sensible idea in city traffic. General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on roads outside town, so cars will be moving briskly once you leave the historic centre — stick to bike paths and quieter streets where you can. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, though as a cyclist your main concern is simply staying visible: lights and reflectors are required from dusk onward, and a reflective vest is a good idea if you're riding out to the hills after dark.
