Bangkok rewards anyone willing to trade the Skytrain for two wheels. Slip across the river into Bang Krachao and the city's noise falls away almost instantly — elevated concrete paths wind through mangrove groves and family-run orchards on what locals call the "Green Lung," a jungle peninsula just minutes from the skyscrapers. Ride the other direction and you'll drift along the Chao Phraya riverside path near Rama VIII Bridge, one of the most photogenic stretches in the city, with the suspension bridge lit up as your turnaround point.
Bangkok's biggest sights sit close together along the river and around the old Rattanakosin quarter — too far to stroll comfortably, but an easy, flat pedal by bike. A bicycle also gets you into places motorbikes and cars simply can't reach, like the boardwalks of Bang Krachao or the elevated trail through Benjakitti Forest Park. Traffic and heat are real, though, so the smartest riders here stick to early mornings or riverside routes rather than trying to cross the whole sprawling city in one go.
Good news: cycling is the easiest vehicle to rent in Thailand. No licence is required, and there's no legal helmet rule for adult cyclists, though we'd still recommend wearing one. Most shops set their own minimum age, generally around 18, and will ask for a deposit — it's best to offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the original document itself.
A basic city bike runs around 110 THB per day in the rainy low season, rising to roughly 250–350 THB per day in the busy high season. If you want a hybrid, mountain, or electric-assist model, expect to pay around 400–600 THB per day.
High season runs November through February, when the weather is cool and dry and prices climb along with demand — booking a few days ahead is wise. Low season stretches from May to October, through the southwest monsoon; rain showers are frequent but often brief, and rental prices drop noticeably. If you'd rather skip both extremes, March to May is dry but very hot, so an early start is your friend either way.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right, even on a bicycle sharing the road with scooters and tuk-tuks. Helmets are compulsory for motorcycle riders and strongly advised for cyclists too. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas, but on a bike you'll rarely approach that on Bangkok's crowded streets. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays — a good reason to save the Chang beer for after you've returned the bike.
