Stresa sits right where Lago Maggiore starts to feel dramatic, and the fastest way to understand why is to leave the lungolago behind and point a motorcycle up toward Mottarone. The switchback road that climbs above town rewards you with views over the lake and the Alps that no ferry can match, and afterwards you can drop back down to the water and ride the shoreline out to Baveno or further along to Verbania, with the Borromean Islands drifting past on your right the whole way.
Stresa's centre is compact and mostly for walking, but everything worth seeing beyond it is spread along a lakeshore or up a mountain — exactly the kind of distance and gradient a scooter or motorcycle handles far better than waiting on ferry timetables or hunting for scarce car parking near the water. If you want to **rent a motorcycle in Stresa**, this is a town built for it: short hops for postcard views, longer loops for a full day out.
The licence you need depends on the engine size. A1 covers scooters and motorcycles up to 125cc, while anything more powerful needs an A2 or full A licence. EU and EEA licences are accepted as issued; if yours was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Rental shops in Stresa typically ask for a minimum age of 18 and take a deposit, usually as a hold on your credit card, scaled to the value of the bike.
A scooter or small-displacement motorcycle runs 25–35 EUR per day in low season and 40–60 EUR per day in high season. If you want something bigger for a proper touring day around the lake, larger and premium motorcycles start around 70 EUR and can go past 120 EUR per day.
July and August are Stresa's busiest and priciest months, so book a couple of weeks ahead if you're travelling then. May, June, September and early October give you warm, dry riding weather with far less competition for bikes and much friendlier prices. Outside of that, from November to March, low season sets in and some rental outlets on the lake scale back or shut for the winter — check ahead if you're planning an off-season trip.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or motorcycle, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on regular roads outside town, and up to 130 km/h on motorways — though you won't need those around the lake. Dipped headlights stay on at all times on two wheels. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero if you've held your licence less than three years or are under 21.
