Taurisano won't appear on many first-time Italy itineraries, and that's exactly the point. Down in the flat, sun-baked farmland of Salento, at Italy's heel, a bicycle turns quiet backroads lined with dry-stone walls and centuries-old olive groves into your own private route. Pedal out toward the whitewashed lanes of Specchia one morning, then push further to the lighthouse at Santa Maria di Leuca, where the land simply runs out into the sea. This is territory built for two wheels, not a windscreen.
What makes Taurisano especially good for cycling is the landscape itself: no hills to grind up, no motorway noise, just gently rolling farm tracks and minor roads with little traffic. Public transport out here is thin and a car feels like overkill for distances a bike covers easily. If you want to rent a bike in Taurisano, you get the freedom to hop between hill towns in twenty minutes and, with a bit more stamina, reach the Ionian coast around Gallipoli and Ugento under your own power.
Standard bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes up to 25 km/h need no licence, registration or insurance in Italy, so renting is straightforward. Faster, throttle-driven e-bikes are treated as mopeds and follow different rules. Rental shops set their own minimum age and normally ask for photo ID; an International Driving Permit is only relevant if you move on to a motorised vehicle. A deposit is standard practice, usually a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the bike.
Expect around 3–6 EUR per day for a standard city or trekking bike in low season, rising to 10–18 EUR per day in high summer. An e-bike typically runs 18–30 EUR per day, especially through July and August.
June, July and August are Italy's high season, and Salento's coastal towns fill up fast, so book your bike rental in Taurisano ahead if you're travelling then. For the best riding conditions, aim for May, June, September or early October — warm, dry and far quieter than midsummer, with easier availability and better rates. Low season runs November to March, when prices drop but some coastal outlets scale back their hours.
Italy drives on the right. Adult cyclists aren't legally required to wear a helmet, though it's sensible on faster descents or busy roads. General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town — figures worth knowing if you're sharing tarmac with scooters and cars on the way to the coast. Bikes need working lights and reflectors from dusk onward, and a reflective vest or jacket is required outside built-up areas at night. If you plan to combine your trip with a scooter, remember Italy's 0.5 g/l blood-alcohol limit applies, dropping to zero for riders under 21.
