Phuket rewards travellers who don't stick to a single beach. Rent a motorcycle and you can wake up watching the sunrise from a quiet east-coast road at Cape Panwa, spend the afternoon weaving up to the sea views at Promthep Cape, and still make it back for dinner in the old shophouse streets of Phuket Town. On two wheels the island stops being a resort and starts feeling like somewhere you actually live for a week.
Phuket is roughly 50km long, hilly, and its beaches, viewpoints and temples are scattered wide apart, with public transport too patchy to string them together. A scooter or motorbike solves that in one go, letting you set your own pace instead of waiting on a songthaew. Outside Patong's rush hours the roads are manageable, and many of the island's best spots sit on the kind of winding, sea-facing lanes that are far more fun to ride than to be driven along.
By law you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence, or your home licence plus an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and without the right licence your insurance is generally void. Most rentals set a minimum age around 18. A deposit is standard practice; it's better to offer cash or a photocopy of your passport than to hand over the original document.
A basic automatic 125cc scooter runs roughly 150–250 THB per day in low season and 250–400 THB per day in high season. Bigger bikes, from 150cc up to 300cc, or well-kept scooters from established shops, can go for 400–800+ THB per day.
High season runs November to February, when demand and prices both peak, so booking ahead pays off if you're travelling then. Low season stretches May to October, through the southwest monsoon, and is when you'll find the best rates — expect the odd sudden downpour, but plenty of dry riding in between.
Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and are enforced with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural highways; motorcycles aren't allowed on motorway sections. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, tightened to 0.02% for younger and new licence holders, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers on you at all times — checkpoints around Phuket are frequent.

When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
